Have used a kind of home made one before while taking pictures of coins. I just cut up a one gallon milk jug to use it as the light diffuser. works pretty well, so i think this should work if used or set up correctly. Looking at this one makes me think you could make your own with products from Lowe's or Home Depot.

They do work, Scooch. As Tom said, they're pretty easy to make but the price of this one isn't too bad.

I've never tried it, so I can't give advice on it, but I've seen home made versions of this type of set up. Olimpia posted her set up on TAGF (I think) to showcase her beautiful beads. She used one of those large white ice cream tubs turned on it's side and stabilized, with spotlights on the sides and it worked out great! But really, the price of the one you posted is pretty good and ready to go!

And using LED lights instead of Halogen would allow for more light combinations and a lot less heat and a whole lot less of a fire hazard. Looks like I'm off for a shopping run....................

I think the tent idea is a good way to control the light for small objects. The key to getting the right color showing up on your camera is to have the right lights. Usually halogen light bulbs work but poorly. I have found that color corrected, full spectrum CFL is the way to go. I use two floor lamps with 5 bulbs in each. I usually have to point them away from the object because of the glare. The tent eliminates glare most of the time, by the way. Most things that I make do not fit inside a tent.....

Scooch, my hubby is a professional photographer. He uses one of these tents to take pics for me for the juried shows. I forgot to check how big this ten was - his is about 2' square. Wayne is right about the lights, DH never uses the tent without setting up his lights. He get great pics for me- sorry you haven't seen his 'tent' ones- but the tent does make a huge difference!! Using this white tent you can get a proper color balance too - your colors are more true.

These are the studio lights I now use. They are floor standing and adjustable. They contain 5 bulbs (100 watt, color corrected, full spectrum CFL).
