I was looking through my book this afternoon and came upon some pics of some things I did awhile back when I was in my "Stringer Period"!  I wanted to bend some stringer for a design but found after many, many, many attempts that I was candle challenged.  I fumed about it for awhile then started taking a look at my molds and found tons (ok, maybe a handful!) of great shapes for bending stringer! I bent stringer over bowls, weave molds, wave molds...anything that would give me interesting shapes then I started playing!  My very first piece just happened...I had some broken pieces of bent stringer on the table and a couple of pieces looked just like lips!  Portrait of a Kiln God or "Crankyman", as I lovingly call him, was born! He stays in my work room to remind me to pay attention to what I'm doing!

I had lots of fun playing with bent stringer for awhile after that.  Here are just a few of the little  things I put together...not fine art but fun pieces and all but a couple are living in new homes!

So I guess my point to all this is when you think you can't do something because you don't have the right equipment or you're "challenged" take another look around the studio and see what else those tools and molds can be used for.  You might surprise yourself!

Now where did I put that bin of bent stringers?

Thanks, Mal!  The Sunberries dish was a baby gift!  The baby isn't a baby anymore and uses it to hold her hair clips!

These are lovely.

Becki, do you still use a candle to bend the stringers over the shapes?

Oh Becki, these are sooooo cool.  I bought some stringers last month and was thinking about things like this. Of course haven't done anything with the stringers.  Thanks so much for posting these, this is so inspirational..

Cool Becki. As per our conversation today about the woven lampshades..that fine stringer looks to be about the size of what was worked into those woven pieces.

No, Linde, I use the kiln!  I'm not as challenged with that as I am the candle!

Wow, Kev...stringer is kind of fragile to be woven into a shade!  I'll bet it was cool, though!

I found another that I have to show cuz it was so fun!  I call this guy a Wisp!  Or is it a gal?  Hmmm........

Great fun Becki! Do you use a torch to make the stringers themselves? When you said that you used a candle, I thought you were making the stringers that way?

Nancy, the stringer are store bought...I just bend them.  Joe's the only one around here that plays with an open flame!

Di, I don't think the Wisp has a gender...it just is!

Joan, the berries are made from little scrap pieces fired in the kiln to make dots...they are dimensional.

You should try it, Anne!  You can get wacky creative!

There are other Beckisms but some of them can't be repeated here!  shocked

Linde, you'll be surprised what you can come up with!  Bending the stringer in the kiln is quick and easy and once you take a look at them and start breaking them up you see all kinds of things!

Thanks, De!
