I have an extra one of these crystal lamp bases and I didn't know if I could make a replacement shade out of stained glass...

the shade that goes with it is pretty heavy... it measures 6" in diameter...

Yes, I would say the base would work fine for a stained glass shade.  You would want to keep the new shade about the same size as the original snce the lower edge be positioned where the orignal was.

The next decision would be which type of shade would you prefer to make?  The two choices would be a panel shade or a form based curved shade (cone, dome, etc).

Lou Ann this is funny. I had the garage sale last week and sold on of these lamps. I knew I had two but thought the other was mysteriously broken (if you know what I mean) and while finishing cleaning out the junk area in the storage area today guess what I found??? So maybe a shade for it will be down the line.

I would definatly use that base! I'm always on the lookout for all sizes and shapes of bases in consignment shops. The only ones I pass up are the ones that have little or no weight at the bottom. Sometimes you can add lead weigths underneath the base for more stability.

Thanks Wayne and Nancy,

my thought right now is to try and get a ball or bowl that is the same size as the original shade and do a very simple design...

Di,

I have 2, this is a third... I had one and my Aunt sold me hers but when she packaged it she left it in a velvet bag to mail it and you can only imagine how many pieces my shade arrived in...

I thought of Nansea and Rebecca when I saw this lamp base! Why? Nansea has told me that she picks up any sturdy base she can find for her fabulous lamp shades, and that small base looks like it has a nice sturdy bottom (and is probably a bit heavy).
And Rebecca had a great "Challenge to Cindy" on TAGF instructing on how to make a lamp shade by wrapping an appropriate sized styrofoam ball with inside out masking tape and placing foiled pieces of glass and nuggets on it, making sort of collage-type glass shade. This looks like the perfect sized lamp to try that out!

Gwen,

It was Rebecca's challenge that made me remember I had this base -- it has been upstairs for a couple of years just collecting dust...

Ah ha! So we're thinking along the same lines! Woo hoo!
I did Rebecca's challenge to Cindy to make a little candle holder, turned out pretty neat. My friend loved them so much that she requested 4 of them (hanging) for her wedding. They turned out nicely, I used clear glass nuggets and clear scraps of clear textures glass, some iridescent. The candle light was very neat through them... I bet that small bulb in your lamp would have a similar effect.

What an awesome treasure you found hidden away!

Let me see if I can post a picture...

I made these hanging candle holders by wrapping a plain glass votive holder in sticky-side out masking tape. I used copper-backed foil to add a little bit of color and metallic shine to the "black and clear" candle holders. Hung from tiny chains and ribbons, they were pretty cute! The little heart-shaped wire hangers were purchased that way at Hobby Lobby, though someone with more patience could probably easily make them on their own! I wish I had thought to take a picture of them at night during the reception. They looked so funky and cute flickering in the candle light!

Hey, thanks everyone! I think they're cute, too! They were actually so fun to make, a little glass collage. I'm now keeping my eye out for a sturdy little lamp base and small vase cap so that I can make a lampshade!
