Unfortunately our great escape to Wheaton isn't working out! We tried but it just isn't coming together the way we'd hoped.  HOWEVER............ CORNING has been very helpful, and sincerely want our business,  and as they were our other choice we hope you'll agree with us this is a great alternative and come to meet us there!

Corning are offering to set up 3 hour, 3 day classes for us in: Glassblowing, Flameworking, Painting on Glass; and Fusing and Sandblasting. They require a mimimum of 6 students per class and a maximum of 9 (except fusing and sandblasting which is 18). Each class will cost $192. per participant. There will be morning and afternoon classes so it appears that you'll be able to fit in two classes if you so choose.

We'll also have an evening where we'll "play" with wire, you'll bring your wire and tools, no cost unless we have to rent a room to be able to do it in.

The date of our escape is May 4, 2010 to May 8, 2010.  Tuesday to Saturday - which means travel days will be Monday before and Sunday after.

As for accommodation, Staybridge Suites is very close to the Corning Studio and room costs appear to be in the range of $116.80 to $199.00  Days Inn is also fairly close and a non-smoking room is $109.95.  Those are posted rates, we expect we can do much better at obtaining a group rate once we know how many members are attending and how many rooms we'll need. We can probably go farther out if we want to taxi or rent a couple of vehicles. Anyway, that detail doesn't need to be finalized for some time, just mentioning it so you can work out your budget.

For anyone taking a class admission to the Museum is included. Anyone attending who does not take a Studio class would pay for admission to the Museum should they want to tour through.

Corning would like to know how many to plan for so it would be appreciated if you'd reply to the thread and let us know if you're interested. I'm also posting a poll that you'll find at the top here. If you're planning to attend please indicate the two classes you'd like to take so we know if we meet their minimum class size. They're also asking us whether we want beginner or advanced instruction. I don't think any of us are beginners, although some of us may be learning a new aspect of the art, but we will be advising Corning we are looking for advanced instruction.

For those that have to fly in the Buffalo airport is probably the closest. Maybe for those of us that do have to fly in we could look at trying to coordinate arrival times to facilitate transportation to Corning.  Again, an issue to be dealt with later and by the affected individuals, just mentioning it as a point to consider and coordinate later.

We invite you to visit the Corning site: www.corning.com. There are numerous links in their site that will show you all kinds of other things you can do if you desire. If you have questions we'll do our best to answer them for you!

Please let us know if you're interesting in going on this fun excursion with us and if you're joining us please be sure to register your class preference in the poll. Sure hope you can make it, your AOG team is looking forward to meeting you -- in person!!!

Not sure if I will be able to attend.  Middle of the week during the school year makes it difficult.

Corning is one of the places Judy and I are visiting on our Grande Tour this summer.  We can let you know what we think if we survive.  If there is anything that you would particularly like for us to look at or take pictures of, let us know.  One non-glass thing that I know is in the area is Watkins Glen.  It is a gorge that has a lazer light show.  That's all I remember.

Let me add that since my son and dil will be living in the area, there is a VERY slim chance that I MIGHT be able to swing it.  Umm, I would put two class choices here, but I can't see them from here.  I'll try to get back later.

Another piece of info we need to share!  A financial commitment will be required from attending members in February 2010. Those funds will be required as Corning need a firm committment from us March 1, 2010 so they can arrange for class instructors and studio rental. We will advise you in January what that non-refundable committment will be.

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions regarding the Great Escape.

Anne and De, is the class charge for the 3 days or per day?

Anyone interested in the Watkins Glen, I have been there, it is beautiful.  I can still remember the area and the sounds of the dropping water walls.  It will be good to check on how much it is to get in, I don't recall if there was a charge when we went.   Be sure to bring water to drink, as you will be walking a good long time and it is all up hill until coming back.

Joan, The charge is for each class which lasts 3 days. So if you take 2 classes it would be $192.00 x 2.  You will get 9 hrs of instruction per class , that is why there will only be room for 2 classes per person. But they also have the mini classes that they do daily and if one wants to still try glassblowing or any other mini class they offer they can do that as well.

It has been brought to my attention that Buffalo is quite a distance from Corning.  Actually, the best airport alternative is Binghamton.

Yes it is closer but again like Elmira do all the major airlines fly there. I guess you'll have to check on that. As far as the Corning web site they only mention Buffalo and Rochester.

It's been many years since I was in the area, but "The Birthplace of IBM" and large IBM plant is right there and they had all the major airlines and many flights then to accommodate IBM.  Even though IBM has down-sized a bit, I don't know why that would have changed.  It is a smallish airport on top of a hill.  The runway couldn't be lengthened to allow the largest planes to use it, so there were a lot of flights with the small and medium-sized planes.
