Nancy, one option for cutting the bars is a wet saw used for cutting tiles. They are not expensive and will easily cut through the bars.

I have a Taurus3 ringsaw, but I don't think I want to use it for that...lol.
I think I'm going to try Becki's idea of eliminating the first firing and try fusing the layers of glass on edge. It would be a neat experiment. Bubble powder? ...mmm. I'll have to see if my supplier carries that. Who makes that and what's it called?
