Today's progress. One more firing will be needed after this one, when all the line detail is added.

This is viewing from the backside which is where I applied the 2nd matt layer of paint. Tried the frint..omg..the bubbles were a pain in the --- to work around, so I opted for the backside. I really like the way the bubbles look from the back and it might actually end up being the front...we will see.

Curious, Kev, can the fin on the back be attached in a standing postion to create more depth to the fin.

It really is a beautiful piece as is, just a tech question is all.

It probably could be by someone that knows what they are doing...that lets me out...lol. I suspect you'd have to dam either side of it to keep it upright while it was tacking. Interesting thought Joan...Hmmmmm

Thanks, Kev, I just ordered it from Amazon.  Even though I don't have a kiln, I am very interested in the process and would love to have one some day.

I also wanted to thank you (and everyone else, too) for always making me feel welcome and at home here.  I am so happy to have found such a wonderful place with friendly people and great information!

Smiles!

Thanks, Kev!    th_0f05e6b06ecdd0c   <couldn't resist, had to use this happy guy, he's pretty funny!>>

Very cool!  I was looking at the other two, as well, and decided to get this one first.  I also ordered 'Encyclopedia Of Mosaic Techniques: A Step-by-step Visual Directory, With An Inspirational Gallery Of Finished Works (Encyclopedia of Art Techniques)'.  Phew! a very long title (lol) but it looks like a very interesting and informative resource on mosaics.  I believe someone here recommended it.  I will be bugging the mailman until they arrive, lol!

Have a great Sunday evening!

Here are 2 pics after the second firing of the paint. The first is from the front, the second from the back. I can't decide what I like better. I like seeing the dimensionality of the bubbles from the front, but I really like the look of the bubbles from the reverse...decisions! Also...you can see on one of the pics how it began to slump during the second firing, as I had to fire it with the backside up so it was resting on the bubbles while firing. This will get flattened again with the next firing.

I just noticed it's developed a crack in it as well, so I am going to have to do a full fuse with it again to repair it. Lets hope it works.

The bubbles do have more depth from the back side but that's to be expected when it's under a layer of clear.  It's looking good!

it's looking good Kev.  That's a drag about the crack though, I think to refuse it I'd use the lowest temp I could so as to not have it all run together on you and lose your dimension. Sure hope it works out ok.

Woo is me...lol

I have it in fusing again now as we speak. If the crack gets worse, or even completely cracks, then I will take the pieces and refuse them on to another sheet of clear base...I will salvage this!.. (I hope)..LOL.

Live and learn..that's what it's all about.

Crossed fingers did not help in this instance...it cracked in 2 other places, so I've increased the target temp to 1400 degrees with a 20 min hold to see if it will fuse back together. It may result in the paint burning off. This might be a total waste of time at this point, but you have to try.
