I've worked through my supply of solder and have to reorder. sigh.............prices have increased a lot!! I prefer to use 63/37 --- I know it's more expensive.. and I have a choice of Mastercraft, Ultimate or Canfield from my suppliers. Mastercraft is quite a bit less expensive. I'm looking for feedback - please. Is the Mastercraft a much inferior product, is Canfield just making us pay for their name and Ultimate is really expensive. Help!

Anne, check Y Glass for prices with the shipping they have always been the cheapest around the states. I use victory and love it. Others have said they don't care for it, but I have not had any issues with it. Y Glass has always been a great group to deal with for me when I comes to solder and foil. They are also the cheapest around for texutred glass too

I have used both Mastercraft and Canfield - I see no difference in the solder - but then again as they say in the ads "Your mileage may vary". In my gallery, the candle holder with the Celtic Cross was done with Canfield, the Lamp Shade was done with Mastercraft - both are 60/40.

I only use canfield 60/40 and was recently told about isgs.com and when I looked at their solder it was over $2 per roll cheaper than yglass and that was the cheapest I had found after a lot of searching...
don't know how good they are as a supplier but I'm planning on using them for my next order -- I think my mom may have already placed a solder order with them but I'm not sure

Wow, great information LA..I know I'll check it out!
I've used both Canfield and Victory 60/40 and found very little difference between them. I also tend to use 60/40 on most the panels, but items like boxes and lamps I tend to use 50/50. I run my iron a bit on the hot side, so maybe that explains why I like them both. I think I saw a thread somewhere where Graham suggested that the temperature of the iron makes more difference than the brand of solder. If that's the case, why waste extra money if the difference is negligible?

I have been purchasing my solder from Apex Glassworks on ebay. The Avril Solder flows better than any I have used. I purchase the 10 pounds to get the lowest price. The solder is also made in Ohio. I have ordered other things from them and the service has been great! Bevel prices seem good, also. Deb in Ohio http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Apex-GlassWorks

May I ask what it is that you like about 63/37? I've seldom heard of anyone using 63/37 for anything but decorative soldering, but it sounds like, for you, it's your primary solder. Only used one roll myself, intended for decorative work, I mistakenly picked it up and tried to solder a couple of ordinary seams. I found it just awful to try and make a decent bead with.

I was using 60/40 years ago Graham - maybe I got a bad roll but it just gave me a lot of grief. I had 63/37, used it and I just liked the flow and the bead it gave me. I've just never given a thought to going back to 60/40 based on that old 'if it ain't broke don't fix it" theme. It is my primary solder. Maybe I should reconsider that....obviously I seem to be the only one here using it all the time. Looking around though, it really is shocking how much solder has increased in price in the last year!!

ISGS has gone up, just checked it myself because there was a $3 difference last week and I don't remember the pricing being sale pricing... It is now the other way around and both are higher than they were... wish I had bought the 6 rolls I needed because isgs price has almost doubled from what I saw LA

what's really weird LA is I went into ISGS after I read your post yesterday. I know what came up said Canfield 60/40 was 6.10. Went and checked my Delphi wholesale acct to compare prices and when I went back isgs was 15.60. I'm sure I didn't imagine it and I couldn't get the original page up again. hummmmmmm.

Anne, thank you.... I thought I was going crazy when I went there today and it was $15.60 -- it was $7.+ last time I was out there -- I didn't have time to go through my history this moring to see if I could get the original page to come back up... based on this I won't be ordering from them, too afraid the price will change between the shopping cart and the credit card LA

The metal market moves up and down as the stock market does. You always have to do a last minute check because you never know when they are going to update their prices. Yglass selling 60/40 for $7.65 makes it about a dollar over wholesale. UPS costs alter the cost greatly so you must always consider the quantity you are purchasing and the shipping costs. Sometimes it is a good idea to email them ans ask them the shipping cost to ship your solder to your zip code.

Thanks Wayne, I did email them about shipping costs and got an almost immediate reply! Even converting the $ to Canadian and adding the shipping costs I'm way further ahead than if I bought it here at my wholesale cost. It pays to shop everyone!! We're all lucky we're here and everyone is so helpful and willing to share. Thanks, all of you!

Anne, I am soooooo happy it worked out for you. Yes shopping around really can add to our shopping abilities LOL
I always check around before I order, but every time I have needed solder so far Y Glass has always beat everyone else's prices. Thier foil prices are usually much lower than most too.
