I generally do not like to hang my stained glass with suction cups -- I'm always afraid the window is going to change temperature too much and the suction cup is going to let loose and you know what happens then....

Well, if I want to continue with the "shop" I've been working with, she is going to be moving back to a room at her house so her space is going to be limited but she did tell me I would have free use of 15' of windows to hang suction cups on (not sure what type of windows I'm looking at or if it is a sliding door)

So my question to ya'll is what types of small projects do you make that can be hung on suction cups?

I already make irises, pansies, 5 petal flowers and cardinals so any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Too bad she didn't have a curtain rod overhead that you could hang them from via fishing line.

Good idea, I'll have to ask her what she has up there... at the current shop she had adjustable glass shelves that rested on brackets that went into a slotted thingy on the wall so we hung chain behind the shelf and used small hooks to hang my stuff; worked pretty good as long as we paid attention to what we put on it (we had 1 crash to the floor because it was too heavy)

You can get some pretty strong line, and it's invisible from a distance.

Lou Ann, I'm going to take a pic and post it tomorrow for you of a shelf I have above my window that if she'd let you put one up you could hang tons of stuff from and not have to worry about suction cups. I'll take a pic for you in daylight!!

I wouldn't put much on suctions cups for very long. While I do use them in my glass room I'd be leary about someplace out of my view?? I'm going to try what Kev just mentioned instead.

thanks Anne -- where it is her house she may be a little more flexible than she was at the shop

I'm of the very same mind Malinda, when I go next Thurs to pick up my stuff from the shop, I'm going to ask her if there is a rod -- the other thing she might let me do is run jack chain along the top of the frame and the put hooks off it and hang the fishing line from the hooks....

However, if I need to leave my stuff with someone, Mary hasn't been a bad person at all, she understands there is a lot of time involved with what we do and she appreciates that -- my strawberry fan still hasn't sold and I asked her if I should reduce it and she very quickly said no... (the shop in ME has been almost the opposite)

LouAnn here's the picture of what I use.  It's a bit dark, if it's not clear enough for you let me know and I can have Cal take one with his good camera and I'll email it to you. I love this set up - mine is empty right now as I'm packing for a show but it holds multiples of stuff, gets it all out of the way, and gives the benefit of natural light.  Maybe she'd be flexible in having a couple of extra holes in her wall.

thanks Anne,

that is a cool idea, I might put one of those up in my laundry room so everyone sees my stuff as they come up the driveway....

I'm going to have to make a list of all these suggestions to see what she might be open to doing... she's been pretty flexible where she is now so I'm sure she'll work with me as best she can....

Obviously hanging the items with fishing like from a sturdy spot is much better than suction cups.  If you do end up using suction cups then you will be greatly restricted.  I only hang small sun catchers from them.  I moisten (lick) the suction cup and stick it onto the glass.  I then run my fingers all the way around it to make sure it is on good.  I then wait about 10 minutes before I put anything on it.  This seems to work well.  My wife puts suncatchers on them all the time in our kitchen and I have yet to have one fall off.

Scooch,

I do the same thing when I put them up but not knowing what her window situation is, I'm really leary, if I get there and it is a sliding door, I'm not putting anything on it or in front of it... I'm also thinking of seeing if she'll let me do a display similar to the white shelf thingy you posted from one of your shows -- I could easily buy 4 4' sections and strap them together and then stand them on a crate to hang just about any size item on...

I went through all my patterns last night and came up with about 10 that I would be willing to put on suction cups and a few of them are a pain to do because the pieces are so small... I just hate the pass up the opportunity to have my cards out there somewhere that might draw a larger commssion.

or you could buy 2 2x6 ft and one 2x4 and strap them together LA - then you don't have to worry about a crate.  And...........if you can get that kind of room from her you could put a table between the 6ft ones then you have room to display your fan lamps etc. That's how I set up my display for shows, and I put lights on the tops of the 6 ft pieces.

Boy you'll have all kinds of options to discuss with her!

When I worked in the gift shops we had small suncatchers hanging in the windows all the time. We used suction cups and had a small jar of crisco and put a dab on a finger and coated the suction cup.  Worked well and they were stain glass the biggest being about 6x 11 and never had one fall.

Anne, I doubt she'll let me put a table -- she is moving 2 display rooms into one and her stuff is going to have priority... she has a lot of display tables already... I'll probably have to see what other vendors move with her...

That's the ticket!

Spit works for a while, but it dries out, and eventually "cracks" allowing air to enter the cup, them splat - it's on the floor.

The "crisco" thing is good - we used cooking oils here. It lasts much longer than spit. WEven at that, It's a good practice to take the stuff down every six months or so, and re-stick it to the window.

Fishing line has a finite life span in sun-light. Like all synthetics, it gets brittle with exposure to the sun. I prefer 18 or 20 gauge wire, myself. Wire also has a little rigidity that allows positioning of in a certain "attitude" too.

Yes when the windows needed cleaning the suctions cups came down and we did reapply the crisco.
