Anne,

which one -- the one that is poured or the one I just cut -- technically (according to Spectrum), they are both green; I'm just not sure about the poured one...

thanks Anne -- I thought it looked more blue too...

Thanks Kev and Meaco -- it's actually a pretty easy piece to put together now that I've gotten the hang of using flashcrete instead of concrete

LouAnn, I have some questions about doing these stones.  I have never made any as you will see by my questions.  They look lovely, so I think you may have hooked me on trying some.

How heavy are they when you pour them.  Is the flascrete hard to work with?  Is that the one you can buy at lumber marts and what kind of mold do you use.  Do you sell them?

Joan,

Is the flascrete hard to work with?
Compared to concrete stepping stones, the flashcrete is pretty easy -- it mixes a lot easier and dries a lot quicker; however, they recommend using vaseline on the mold which doesn't work as well as the no-name Pam I use for concrete. It is as difficult to mix as a nut bread (provided you are doing the bread by hand and not a stand mixer). I am not sure if it is easier to mix because I am using much smaller molds (my concrete stones are either 16" round or 18" hexagon)

Is that the one you can buy at lumber marts and what kind of mold do you use.
I ordered my flashcrete from Dick Blick (I don't know where you would buy it locally as I don't have a place, maybe AC Moore if you have them) -- it is not the same as concrete from the lumber marts at all.

I buy my molds at Hobby Lobby dirt cheap compared to Delphi and Glasscrafters and they are the same ones -- HL also has an online site.

How heavy are they when you pour them.
The molds for these is only 8" round so they are not very heavy at all (just under 5 lbs)

Do you sell them?
These are all sold except 1 of the hummingbirds (I did a replacement in case the first is too blue). I may do a few of these to have in stock where they are so small; however, I do not do my larger concrete ones in advance because they generally have a minimum of $10 in glass and I have not had any problems telling people they take a minimum of 45 days (concrete and flashcrete both need about 30 days to cure before you can seal them and that takes a few days to get a good dry between each of the coats.)

I also want to mention that this stuff isn't cheap --- I have as much "concrete cost" between the flashcrete and weldbond glue in one of these 8" stones as I do 2 of my larger concrete stones (the larger take 3-4 times more concrete measured in cups as the flashcrete I used here)

Hope I answered all your questions and didn't scare you away because they are fun to do.

Thanks LouAnn, you are sweet to answere with such detail.  In reading, I have another question.  What do you use the glue for, and does it tell you on the box of flashcrete how much to mix for each stepping stone?  Thanks.

You're welcome Joan,

De told me to mix the glue with the water to make them stronger. While I was looking for the material, I found a lot of sites where people said they crumbled (my guess is they weren't sealed).

Yes, the box tells you what to use for about 20 common mold sizes as well as how to calculate what you need for an odd or custom-sized mold.

Joan,

You mix the Weldbond as a 1/5 mix.  1 part Weldbond to 5 parts water.  It's supposed to help keep the flashcrete from cracking or breaking..and it does work, as long as you take them inside during the extremely cold months.  I don't think that there's an additive out there that could keep up with our freezing cold winters.

Kev,

I'll do a tip sheet but I don't feel competent enough to do a tutorial because I've only poured these 3 so I'm sure I'll be learning a lot more as I do more...

Great stepping stones LA. Maybe you can just take some pics step by step as you go and we all could learn with you....just a suggestion.

These are great, Lou Ann. I too like the green color (second one) better than the blue. The stepping stones look great though. Nice job with the explanations, thank you.
