omg Tracy..tooo funny!  That about exhausted my understanding of Feng Shui..but I think what made me think of it was that my room would be roomier if I could put the bed under the windows..but then it would be facing the door.  And that would break not only one rule of Feng Shui, but two.

I'm still LOL over your comment.

WOW!  Talk about wonderful, and I don't mean only the pattern.  The pattern is wonderful but so are all of you.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Yes, I would love to get a jpg copy of your version with border, Kev. As you can probably tell from my hand-drawn stuff, I don't have Glass Eye yet.

I do not mind if anyone else uses the cat.  Thanks to all your help and great suggestions, I think it belongs to all of you as much as it does me.  I am so thrilled to end up with a good pattern, I wish I could email a huge hug!

I don't know much about Feng shui. I looked up maneki neko on the internet and now I can't find my original source of info. This one says that a raised right paw "invites people and good fortune."  http://www.namaii.com/manekineko/maneki-neko-types.html
Guess my giving him extended claws doesn't make him quite that friendly!

don't anything about Feng Shui, but I learned the hard way, at the hands of an ex, that it is never healthy to have my back facing a door, LOL

Love your Maneki Neko kitty design, Sue.  If it's O.K. with you,  I would like to try a version for my daughter's newly opened craft shop, especially as they are 'cat people' (have 6, mostly rescues, of their own....)  She also has a little section where she sells donated goodies in aid of their local feral cat project.
Just wanted to add an idea for the 'crystal ball' that he holds - if you can locate an old glass lens from an old pair of glasses (spectacles??) and grind it into shape,  it gives a nice rounded 3-d effect.
Have fun - looking forward to seeing the finished article.

You could also use the lens from a magnifying glass.

The “Beckoning Cat” is of Japanese origin and has long been a symbol of good fortune.  There are lots of stories and beliefs about it’s origin and the meaning of the raised paws but most believe that a raised left paw brings in and welcomes customers and a raised right paw brings good luck and wealth.

You did a nice job with your pattern but he looks a little angry!  They usually have a calmer, happier expression.

It's fine if you use the kitty, Elzabeth. I also help out with feral cats in my part of Charlotte, working with a group to do TNR and feeding the critters.  I go around every other Friday to the colonies. It is heart-breaking to see former pets ending up in feral colonies, but more and more of them are coming in as people leave them behind during moves or even bring them and dump them.  Some of the group have actually seen people do that, open a car door and push a cat out.

Originally the kitty was supposed to be protective. That was the reason behind his look: he was protecting the future.

I had searched on "Chinese lucky cat" and somewhere read that protective versions had their right paw up and beckoning versions, like the ones in the Chinese store windows, were welcoming people, especially customers.  I think I even read that black was supposed to be the protective color and white the beckoning one.  It was also when I learned the cats are originally Japanese, even if the Chinese do use them a lot.  So much for my research!

My last reply ran out of space.

I did make a second version of the cat, one with both paws up, just in case I can't come up with a good crystal ball.

Everyone will be really impressed on Thursday when they get a gander at the pattern!

I got a question emailed to me about the meaning behind the cat holding a crystal ball. Traditionally, maneki nekos mostly hold coins or fish, but there are many modern examples of them holding other things, including crystal balls. I liked the idea of them holding a crystal ball and various examples looked neat:
This page indicates that holding a crystal ball symbolizes either wisdom or wealth, but I like it being a symbol of the Future. http://www.siriparadise.com/elements-of-japanese-figurines-maneki-neko.html
