This past weekend my new workshop was delivered! I am as excited as a kid at Christmas!! This is right off the driveway of our house. The inside still has lots of work to do but this is a first big step toward my own place to work and display my work. We will be finishing it off as time (and budget) allows. Pics to follow as we work at it over the next year or so..... The next step will be windows!

We have one that is 12 by 32 and it is the best thing we ever did. Has one big window in front but ours is turned sideways from yours, and one smaller window. We insulated it very good, put beadboard for walls, put in a small bathroom and a window unit heat/ air. It takes almost nothing to heat or cool it. The cost really wasn't all that bad but that was before prices started going up 4 years ago. You will love yours and the porch is a great place to hang out or hang things.

We ordered it with no windows because the ones they offered where to small, so decided to pick out our own and install what we really wanted. The brown tape on the inside walls is where we were masking off where the windows will go, subject to change as we figure out where everything else will go to.

Sounds like we are following your lead. It will be heated and cooled. It is 12 X 34 and we have taped off the floor where the bathroom will go already! I just loved the porch and it matches the porch on the front of our house. The work shop is located at our "vacation" home but it is where we plan to retire in a few years. I hate coming back to cold weather and work when we go down there (in Arkansas) and with this building calling my name, I find it even harder to lock up and drive back up north (Illinois). This is the first concrete thing that tells me I might just get to spend my days doing what I love, so it has more meaning to me than just a workshop!!! I wanted a little extra room so I can have friends join me to work on their own projects there too. A gathering place for artists, what better way to spend your days?

That is a wonderful size. My 12x18 is exactly half the size I need.

Whoo hoo! That'll be an awesome studio. Take your time to get it exactly the way you want - which will likely change a few times till you settle on something. Looking forward to following the pics as you go forward.

I have on too. I would like to start the inside work this spring. If you have insulated yours, give me some advice on what method. Do you need to use those vent baffles in the ceiling? What type of insulation did you use. I think mine is 12x16.

Deb, proper venting is very important to any wood framed structure. Actually any structure should be vented for many reasons. Check with your local lumber mart, they have people there that can give you advise as to how much and where to place the venting.

We are going to put in several windows for air circulation. (Lots of nice days there where opening the windows is all that is needed) Don't know if we will be putting venting in the ceiling or not, have to have some "dead air space" in the ceiling for them to work properly I am told. But we will need some fresh air in the building for sure. The vents that came with the building on either end will be replaced at some point, there is no way to close them, we do have bugs! I would like to put an old fashion screen door up, but we are still at the talking all that out stage. Still thinking on the insulation too. It will be insulated, either spray foam or fiberglass "rolls" between the studs with dry wall over the insulation. Have to price out each option yet.

not sure where you are located but in our garage we got some of those insulation sheets that they generally put under siding (about 1/2" thick and silver) on the inside and then covered them with I think panelling (can't see it with all the tools on the walls and this is hubby's domain so I don't spend a lot of time there), we also created a ceiling with them so that we aren't heating just the roof area and it keeps it toasty warm in there (we live just north of Nashville TN); this fall when we redid our roof we did add a ridge vent, not sure if it has helped at all because we haven't been through summer yet :-)
as far as bugs and the vents at the top, get some window screen material and staple it to the wall covering the entire vent area -- will still allow air flow but should greatly reduce the bugs
