You solved the holly lantern puzzle for me, so here is another one. On YouTube there is a video that shows making stained glass facial features for Jack O'Lanterns, much on the idea of Mr. Potatohead.  There are holes cut in the pumpkin to let some light through and then the stained glass pieces are pressed on top of the holes. The video does not show how the pieces are attached.  I was thinking of making some soldering on copper tubing to stick into the pumpkin.  Would triangular shaped pieces of glass be better?  Or maybe the thingy needs to be stronger than both of those? I am attaching a screen capture from the video so you can see what I mean.

The video says there is a pattern on an associated web site but it doesn't seem to be there any more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__LvYVemWE8

I did email the people who made the video and may get some more information from them.  In the meantime, it is fun to think of ways this could be done.   I have a couple of sheets of paper with pencil scratches all over them--but nothing jumps out as "best."

I would think heavy gauge copper wire soldered to the back like posts would work.

I think Kev is right.  If you look at the ears, she says they are one piece.  He says he has one backwards.  One of them has two lines across it.  I think they used heavy gauge wire and soldered it across the ear to both sides of the foil.  (I'm not impressed with their work and they way they hold the cutter seems particularly awkward.

Thank you again.  I am drawing up patterns for my own version of pumpkin facial features.  I will give heavy gauge copper wire a try when I put them together.

If you go to this page and scroll down to where the article about the show you will see a download pattern just above picture click on it and the pattern will download to your computer. They mention how many pins needed for each piece but not what they used.

I would buy some 12 Gauge (Romex) house electrical wire and strip the insulation off.  Take a piece of the bare copper put one end in a drill and the other end in a vice and twist the wire it will not only straighten the wire but also stiffen it making it a better pin.

The video seems to show that even with terrible technique you can still produce interesting things.

That's both funny and, to me, reassuring. I'm not so sure my own technique rates a lot higher than terrible!

The decorations are "cute" but there is no way a candle will burn inside of the pumpkin with no air supply.  You may as well just glue paper decorations on an uncarved pumpkin for the same effect.  IMHO
