I was in one of my fav glass stores the other day and ...got carried away, went in for glass nipper wheels...came out $125 later with new stained glass pattern book, nipper wheels, chain, copper patina, copper u channel, glass and a whole sidetracko idea for making glass stars!!!ha! Just add to the list of wanna do projects why don't I! I want to make some 3d stars to hang over my pond, I have the idea of 3 different sizes, maybe they will light up inside, maybe they will try to resemble the posted pic pattern or not...just mulling it over and hoping to get some feedback as to other patterns, tips, etc...The pattern that I am posting, well, I'm already considering going off the grid, and using the solid copper came stuff, just cuz I wanna try it, not sure if it will work as a lamp for outside(rain?)<issues. The pattern details of this pattern book are waaay too much for me, I am a "show me" learner type, not a instruction booklet type...well, at least not the way this one instructs. So am gonna freehand an idea or am willing to be open to any suggestion coming from you experts! Pics would help!!!! I see there are some great whirly creators here so am hoping for tips! http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh38/calamity-j/2011158.jpgThis is just one star idea, I have other stars at home that I have hanging around that I like too(candle holders) may haul one down and make a pattern from..?

I would think the copper came would work well...it will patina with time, but that will add to the charm of the pieces.

I've got a book that has one of those stars in it..I've been meaning to make one. Can't wait to see it when it's finished. I think that the copper came would look very nice also, and I doubt that the rain would bother the came, just patina it over time.
I haven't looked at the pattern, but I suspect that you'd have to hinge some part of it to get to the lightbulb, in case you have to change it. And I'd also suspect that you'll have to have a ring at the top for hanging, along with chain that you can run the electrical cord up so that it can be plugged in somewhere. Do you have outlets close by your pond?

I love these stars. My daughter-in-law has some very similar that have an opening and a tealight holder in them. They look awesome in the nite.

I used that pattern and mine didn't come together flat. I've thought about trying it again some day when I run out of things to do.

I think the pieces have to be assembled with each other at an angle to end up with that 3D look.

LOL, like it sounds like you'd ever run out of things to do with the number of repairs you do!

Yeah, but I thought the backs would be flat and I could put two of them together back to back and have a 3-D star. The backs were not flat at all - the points stuck WAY up in the air when I laid them on the table. If you tried to put them together with the backs flat, there was a big hole in the middle. No matter which way I maneuvered the pieces, they didn't work and I was disappointed. I don't know if it was the pattern or my expectations, but it didn't fit correctly. If someone will remind me, I will take a picture tomorrow to show you what I mean. Rebecca

Yes! Twister!!!heh heh! Ya, so this idea sounded so good at the time...but I find myself balking more and more...as I am THE WORST at cutting straigh lines...Seriously!!! Not that I let that stop me, but hey, it is such a weird thing! It is sunny today and I am getting out in the yard and getting the other addiction fed...heh heh! Spring Fever is kicking in!

Jane I'm not the best at straight lines either. I got the cuttersmate strip cutter and love, love it. I wish I could go outside and work in the yard but woke up to a winter wonderland of about 7" of snow with more on the way...this is just not right!!!

I sure hope so!!! It was getting so nice with sunny days and being able to shed the winter coats, and energy levels up there. Now we have the white stuff and cold temps and are going to be here for the next 6 days or so and I feel like not doing anything again. I know it will pass but I sure hope it will be gone for good until next Dec.
