This sad announcement was posted on The Forum today. He was one of the countries finest glass painting teachers.  I will really miss him.

"We're sorry to report that Dick passed away late Saturday night. He'd been receiving treatment for esophageal cancer, which left him in a weakened condition. Unfortunately, it seems that the cancer treatment coupled with a quintuple bypass from a few years ago was too much of a strain on his heart and he passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Antrim, New Hampshire.

Many of you know that Dick started the Stained Glass Forum; he cared passionately about sharing his expertise and enthusiasm for stained glass – or, as he wrote it, STAINED GLASS. He was an accomplished painter, designer and educator who gave freely and generously of his 50+ years of knowledge.

He is survived by his wife Victoria, his sons Kent and Christopher, and three granddaughters.

Calling hours will be held at Jellison Funeral Home (www.jellisonfuneralhome.com) in Peterborough, New Hampshire, on Saturday, March 5, 2011, from 1 to 3 PM, with a funeral service following, in the funeral home, at 3 PM. Burial will be private.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society."

It is a great loss for the "traditional" stained glass community. But his knowledge and the generous way he shared it were helpful to many contemporary ("modern"?) stained glass pracitioners, too. Dick was passionate about the art and the craft and seldom shied away from expressing his opinions.

One of my favorite things to read on his forum were his storied about "the early days" of stained glass - the 1950's mainly - in NYC. He knew and worked with numerous ledgends of the trade and his stories were fascinating, educational and even funny.

All of will be a bit poorer for his loss but a lot richer for having had him with us for so long.  - Tod

Kev, I tried to get you to take a class from him.  I will always be glad that I did it.  I had planned on waiting, and I am glad that Judy talked me out of waiting.
