I have one shop that I can get glass from thats near by, which is still a 45 min. drive.

I was looking at possibly ordering a crate of glass from Delphi, is this a good idea or no?
I've never ordered glass before and was just wondering what kind of variety you get?

my experience is each glass pack type is different...

I ordered the youghiogheny little brave pack from delphi and really liked the variety in it (there were 3 12x12 sheets of each color so there was definitely enough for any project)

I then ordered the wissmach english muffle pack and really liked it so I immediately ordered 2 more and wouldn't you know it, I got 3 glass packs that were the exact same

not sure if I would consider my experience good enough to give advice... I do personally prefer going in and looking at what I am getting

Thanks Lou Ann,

I love being able to see what I'm buying before I buy it! ha but the shop I have near by doesn't have a "huge" selection she can order
but that usually takes awhile because she waits for big orders.

I may take my chances and order one....just not sure yet!

I have heard pros and cons on the crater glass too. If you look under General topics their is a board called favorite suppliers with many good places on the web. Warner is also having a no packing fee until Thurs. I personally like to pick my glass out in person as well and  worth a road trip. Not sure where you are but if you are near some of the manufactures it is also worth a trip.

Joe I still have glass sitting in my bins that are left overs from glass packs (and I've been playing around with little pieces for over 17 years). It's such a mixed bag of what you get. Too bad the shop nearby is so restictive in what they have.  Are you close enough to any larger distributors to make take a mini vacation and go shopping? If you can get to a distibutor you can get some really cool glass at a decent price!

I'm in Wisconsin and would LOVE to visit one of the manufacturers sometime!
There's another shop that's about an hour and a half away that has a much better selection, it's just hard to keep driving back and forth all the time!

Ahhh good to know! I must say it was a blast being on that boat, and that was back when I was only 8ish years old.
Crazy going from 40 feet of water to 100's of feet of water!

what it really means is I indulged my every whim when I was in the glass store Joe, ridiculous really!  I stopped doing that a couple of years ago and now just fill in holes when I need to but I'm sure I'll die before all this glass gets used up. I wish more of you lived closer to me!

I thought I was hot stuff when I got back into it and bought the premium kit for stained glass from Delphi and it came with I think 10 sheets of glass! LOL
I'm just beginning so I'm sure I'll stock up soon! plus, my wife and I are looking at moving, so that would be one less thing to move right now!

With one of my glass friends on this board, we have done two glass buying mini vacations.  One year we drove to Atlanta and spent the day at Armstrong, then last year, we drove to Pennsylvania and West Virginia and spent time at Wissmach and Youghney (spelling?).  We got some wonderful deals and beautiful glass.  I also go to Blenko Glass in Milton West VA when we go home to visit husband's Mom and family.  I probably have over 100 1/2 and full sheets, plus about 50 12x12 sheets - will probably outlive me and I'm willing them to my local glass shop.  I've also ordered packs on line and wasn't thrilled with results - too many off colors and duplicates.  Love seeing glass in person and having the glass "talk" to me.  Most of the time I buy at the local glass shop (about 30 minutes from home).

I like to see the glass I am buying, too, but it is about 35 minutes to the city where our only glass store is and I don't drive alone, so I only get there 2-3 times a year. I sometimes have to buy some on line. Watch out for the boxing fees. Many places have a minimum amount of glass to buy or they tack on a huge box fee. If I only want a few sheets I buy from allstainedglass.com. No box fees. I have had good luck with all my orders from them as well as the several other places I have ordered from.

Speaking of boxing fees and how things are packed, I often have my customers order a couple sheets of large glass from Warner so that they can analyze the double boxing method which works.  I once asked my distributor to do the same since they had no clue how to ship non-crated glass....
