I've been reading the archives for suggestions and found the recent thread started by the talented Meaco concerning her bottle mosaics.

I had already asked a glue question on another old thread, but found these answers/suggestions as well.
Meaco wrote:

"...  I used MAC glue...great glue for glass on glass mosaics.  It tends to be a tad runny you just have to use just a little at a time and work in sections since it's a rounded piece.  I really do love MAC...I do a lot of glass on glass and I think this is the best.  Weldbond goes on white and takes a long time to dry and sometimes it just stays white on bigger pieces of glass.  Silicone is just really messy, hard to clean up after grouting and smells...I've also read about it yellowing over time, but I haven't experienced that.  Thanks again! :)..."

So, one of my questions is which glue works best with slightly larger pieces of glass or ceramics. My plan is a mosaic on glass using both materials for the design.

I appreciate your thoughts.

Hi, Tod! :)  If it heavier pieces then MAC is not going to do it.  It's way too runny.  Weldbond reminds me of just regular Elmer's glue, so not sure about that.  Silicone gives you a really strong hold, so that might be a better option.  There's probably other glues but those are what I have experience with.  Hope that helps a bit! :)

A friend of mine does GOG using tempered (autoglass) and has used Goop in the blue tube. Not sure how weather proof it is but dries clear. She likes it better than welbond because it sets faster. I havent tried it yet.

I answered in the other thread, Tod, but here I am again.  I tried E6000 first, but it smelled too strong and was messy.  I have heard good things about Liquid Nails, but have never tried it myself.  Mac glue turned yellow when I used it and didn't hold well.

I have always had good luck with WeldBond for glass on glass or glass on concrete.  I grout everything.  I haven't put glass on glass outside, but I did a large picnic table and four benches for a friend ten years ago and it has been outside ever since.  I also did a bird bath for myself ten years ago and it has been outside with water in it except for freezing weather.  (When it freezes, I turn it upside down.)  I put tile and grout sealer on all of these items originally and had intentions of putting more sealer every year.  Of course, that didn't happen!  So far everything is in good shape exept the bench I put outside my shop six years ago.  The skateboarders broke the front edge of it.

I always use silicone II clear caulk for outdoor windows.
Large tube in a caulking gun is more economical than the
small hand held tubes.

If you decide to go this route wipe your hands with a paper towel before
trying to wash them.  ;)

For a true glass on glass, if you do have to clean up any seepage wait till it's dry and use a dental tool.
(your dentist will give you broken ones if you ask nicely)
The neater you are working the less clean up afterward.

I have not done much mosaic work, but it has all been glass on glass....I use Streuter's No Days Mosaic Adhesive.  It is the easiest to use....Absolutely NO mess.  I just lay the sheet of adhesive on the glass (if using anything heavier than just glass, like tile or nuggets use 2 sheets)....build my design, then set the glue with a heat gun....permanent and weather proof (according to Streuter).  Glue just disappears from sight.   annabelle
