LOL Elizabeth..it could have! Ranger got his fair share of petting and fawning over.  He's such a good boy.

I'll soon be over this, and as was mentioned previously..when Aiden is about 18..it will make a funny story indeed!

There is a fire door to the shop, but unfortunately there is only a regular knob on it.  For just now it has one of those plastic, child proof knob covers on it..and now I can't turn it because the knob is very small.  I need to make a trip to a hardware store and figure out what I can change it out with that he can't open.

would one of those old fashion hook and eye closures like public restrooms used to have work if you put it high enough that he couldn't reach it? I feel for you with the plastic door handle thingy -- I never did well with those so we tried to find other solutions (deadbolts worked great on the doors we were most concerned about)

and you're very right, at that age they do move quickly and usually silently; it's sometimes hard to get anything done for watching them like hawks :-)

Yes, that might be possible LouAnn, it's a metal fire door that needed to be put in because the shop is over the garage and attached to the house.  I don't know if putting a hole in it would impact the ineffectiveness of it?  Maybe not.  But once it's there, it will never be able to be remove, otherwise it would leave a hole.

LOL..I hate those plastic knob covers too, but it's helped keep him from falling down the stairs into the basement. The current knob to the upstairs door..well...I've never seen one so small. I'm definitely going to have to find some other solution, I don't want him to get back up there again until he's much, much older.

I promised his mother that from here on out, he was going to be literally tied to her (on a leash.)  I think that she thinks I'm kidding...

I doubt that little hole would compromise the door in any way... however, another option would be to replace the existing knob with a deadbolt so that way the studio is locked when you aren't in there and once you disengage the deadbolt you should be able to just push the door open, you would probably have to keep it propped open when you are inside though...
my husband put a peep hole in our metal door and it was pretty easy so it might be just as easy to leave the existing door knob and add a deadbolt above it

Can you put a gate across the opening?

That would be the quickest and easiest solution...but when he first came here we had a difficult time keeping him in his room at night..not wanting him to get up and wander the house, I bought a gate..and then another to put on top of that.  The little bugger is STRONG..he kept managing to push or pull the pressure sensitive gates either through, or back into the room and still escape.  Plus he climbs like nothing I've ever seen.
I expect that he's going to someday have a job like a telephone lineman..he's got natural ability.

Just to let you know how busy he is...he came into my den the other day with a shovel full of wood ash from the wood stove and dumped it on the carpet..he'd also done the same in the living room where the stove is.  That was fun to clean up.  Fortunately the stove hadn't been used in several days so the ash wasn't hot.  But I nearly died when I saw what he'd done.

I have now put up everything breakable in my house, I never had to do that when my children were little..they listened to me and didn't touch things they weren't supposed to.  But he's a totally different kettle of fish.

I can honestly say that I've never seen a child like him..and I'm fairly certain that he'll provide me with many stories to tell.

I just caught up on what was happening here, sorry to hear about your project.

I think a deadbolt would be a great option, and they aren't to hard to put in.

De, what about one of those self closers. They are mounted at the top and the door closes automatically when opened and if you what it open when your in there just use a door stop or a jar of nuggets.

Wow, it sounds like you have your hands full with this little one..
I have the slide bolts on some my inside doors and some have the hook and eye closure. Believe it or not, I put them on to keep the cat out of my shop and bedroom, etc. He was 22# and if he wanted in somewhere he would through himself against the door. We have an old house and sometimes the door would open and I would find him in my shop upstairs. Both types work well.

Sorry about the panel.. it was a beauty, but the next one will probably be even prettier.

De,
I have slowly been recovering from the shock of what happened to your work room.  I would still be absolutely paralyzed with anger/sadness/all the emotions.  Bless your heart and good luck with the clean up!  And I'm sorry that you have to start from stratch again on many projects.  If you lived closer to me you would be more then welcome to come and get as much glass as you need from me since I will not be glassing anytime in the near future.  You could make my house a stop for an upcoming southern vacation!

LOL..he's a handfull alright..visions of handcuffs have been floating through my grey matter.  Kidding....I think.  LOL..I can well imagine that not too much stops a 22lb kitty. WOW.  That's about half the size of my dogs!

Awwh Evelyn..yes I was struck dumb when I opened that door to the shop, and I visited about every emotion there was I think.  My mind has already been working over time on what I'm going to turn the used to be vase/candle shelter into now. LOL.

What a sweet offer!  I wish we did live closer.  You have no idea (well maybe a little bit of an idea) how much I'd like to drag my camper out of the snow bank it's in and go away for a nice vacation someplace warm.

One of these days this experience, I'm sure, will be one of those that will be extremely funny in it's retelling...just not now.

"Every cloud has a silver lining" - THEY (who the h*** are THEY!) say.   Congratulations on your your restraint on not delivering the smack(???)  Maybe Gran's tears served as a good reminder that this was BAD!????   (or not?)  LOL!
