A quick little project I put together this afternoon with some of the smaller pieces of the boiled glass I made earlier. I had to fire up the kiln anyway to refire the melts, so thought I'd throw something small in with them. It's 6" x 6" , white base, clear cap with the boiled glass pieces on top. I think it might be kind of cool to see them spread as they melt.

Here it is after fusing. I am going to have to sandblast it though because the edges of the tidbits have a bit of scum on them. I would have sandblasted them before adding them, but the boiled glass is so fragile, so sandblasting it would cause it to crumble. You can't even cut it without the strip cracking. As a result of that, I am throwing the rest of it out.

I'll sandblast this piece and then slump it into a little curved plate.

I'm enjoying watching you go through the steps.  Thank you for sharing with us.  I'm anxious to see how it comes out when finished.  I know it will be another beautiful piece.

Smiles,
Mary

Any idea why it's crumbling?  How thin are you trying to cut them?

I cut the slices 1/8" thick, but they snap real easily. I tried cutting a few pieces but but they broke in places other than where I scored as well. Pieces cut with a tile saw should be blasted before fusing to remove saw marks, but they would crumble in the blaster.

too bad Kev.  You put a lot of time into this, a shame it isn't working.

This was the boiled glass Marsha. I still haven't decided what to do with the pot melts.

It's the stacking of layers of glass with bubble powder placed between the layers causing the glass to bubble up from the layers below bringing it to the surface like it was boiling.

Bubble powder isn't absolutely necessary for this process.  The high heat and lay up of the glass will force bubbles to the surface.  It can be very cool!

I finally got to get the edges trimmed on this and get it slumped yesterday. Nothing spectacular, but again a  learning experience, as this was the first time I used the saw to trim edges. I did fire polish them first before slumping and they turned out really nice...not the typical rounded over edges.
