Looking for feedback. The kiln I saw advertised was a JenKen, Model GS18, Max temp 1700, 220 volt, 15 amp, interior dimensions: 18" X 9" deep. Also included is what they call a "large" assortment of slumping molds and colored glass. For $400.00
What say ye hot glass folks?

Sounds like a deal to me as long as it's in good shape. I love my Jen Ken.

De I love my Jen Ken its a 18 but deeper. Its big enough for most things and if you not going to make anything real tall should be great. The price is great too and the added bonus of molds...awesome!

The computer is the most expensive part of a glass kiln. So check the price of a new controller to add to it. Then the $400 may be a real good deal. Especially with glass and molds. I don't think I would want to do what we do without the controller.

I found a Sentry 2, 12 key controller board for $350. This is what I use. I don't know what else you need to make it work on the $400 kiln. It is worth doing a little research and asking a few questions. http://www.aaproducts.com/ParContr.html

Unless I read that wrong it sounds like the Sentry is made for a Paragon kiln? Should I be asking these people if the pyrometer is digital or analog? And I'm assuming with the pyrometer I'd have to be keeping a really good eye on it while it's "cooking" the glass?
Can you tell I know nothing...and if this is not a good price for the kiln and I could get a better deal by purchasing new with an electronic controller..maybe that's the way I should go?

Well the upside to a new kiln is that you have a warranty with it and it will have a digital controller. You also get to decide exactly what shape and depth you want the kiln to be ie: square vs round, shallow vs deep, depending on what you'd like to be able to do with it.

De, you can use pretty much any stand alone controller with that kiln. New kilns don't always come with a controller but it is an option you can choose. I think if the advertised kiln is in good shape and works well it's a helluva price...even if you have to add a controller you're going to pay less than a new one.

I never have had a controller and do okay without it. The only time I have a problem is when I forget and leave something in too long. :(

Thanks Becki, Anne, Rebecca and Kev. I sent an email to the people advertising the kiln...but I haven't heard anything back from them..sometimes an indication that it's gone already. Who knows maybe they'll still respond. But I've learned something here anyway and I'll keep my eyes peeled for any new ads that come along. I truly appreciate your input and help! De

Not only DO I need a vacation anywhere warm at this particular moment in time..but I'd also need a loan to pay for the trip, buy the kiln and ship it home. LOL But I sure hope that someone can take advantage of that offer! "If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride". De
