I had a fun day today, an old roommate from years ago dropped me a line on facebook about my stained glass. Turns out one of her university classes is an art program, she has her BA and is back in school for her BEd, and she needs to do a focus on an art/artist and actually make something in the medium. Happy to help, plus I haven't seen her in years so it was a chance to play catch up, I had her over this afternoon for a mini art lesson, she's also coming back to work on the project on Monday. It was really strange to talk someone through it and especially with an hours notice *lol. So cleared my work table in a hurry and even faster drew up a design for her to work with........ um yeah, maybe not *lol. Turns out the first design was a bit too aggressive and had to redraw a super simple something else on the fly  tongue, I totally forgot what it was like to try to cut glass from the beginning, not even knowing how to work with the glass and cutter to start and in a way it felt great!!! I've been patiently working along looking forward to the distant time when some things would just flow naturally and in all that it was easy to forget what I have learned! Wow, what great food for thought! Anyways, so stepping down off my high horse **, I gave her some books to browse through and rated them in which to start just to give her a more thourough idea on the glass work. She's coming back in a few days to finish her piece and then I will be more prepared for her questions *lol!

Amber, good for you.  Relax and enjoy yourself.  It will flow, if you take one step at a time.  Just like you learned.  Try not to get to hung up in tons of tech stuff, this is her first piece.  For her, concentrate on how much pressure to put on the glass to cut it, (important),  foiling evenly, and soldering and cleaning the piece.   You can get into the more advanced info in the interview part of the process.

One of the times I was taking some classes for work,  the focus was on how to explain an entire job to some one and to write a policies and procedures log for the business.  The instructor assigned us a couple strange (or seemingly at the time) papers to write.  One was sewing buttons on ice cream and the other was how to tie your shoes.

The end result was to teach us to take one step at a time and not be offering advanced info first while trying to teach a process, because you loose them to fast and discourage rather then incourage someone.

Relax and have fun, can't be stressed enough.

PS, please do let us know how it goes.

Amber, What a nice way to catch up and also teach someone how to do glass. Relax and enjoy the process. Im sure she will learn to cut glass and may start a new hobby, and she can join us. LOL.
Yes keep us posted on the progress.

Oh Amber, how wonderful!  Yes, this craft, can and does bring past friends back into each others orbits.  I'm glad that you're having lots of fun with your friend.
A couple of years ago an old friend (we've known each other over 30 years!, but we've rarely seen each other, but have kept in touch), who was recovering from open heart surgery and out of work for awhile decided that she'd like to learn SG and so started coming over on Monday nights to begin.  She really didn't think that she'd be very good at it...SURPRISE, she's a natural and is currently working on a gorgeous project, which project # 5 or 6..and we have an absolute blast. She's been good company also on trips to see famous glass artists in NYC...we've definitely rekindled our friendship and it's been great!
So I'm totally happy for you!  Enjoy every minute!
