This was designed with the intention of being  constructed for a birthday present due in Feb. The recipient is a huge figure skating fan and has been in love with it since she was a child.

YES!   I like the second one better too.   Just a little less busy,  but still plenty of movement.   Looking forward to seeing it in real life.

I think technically if she's moving forward that line in front of her wouldn't be there yet, unless she came from that direction but then she's facing the wrong way :)

very nice pattern Kev, I don't know any skaters so I won't be making this one :)

I realize that Mal..... Raspberry..it's more to give a sense of her intended direction...but it could also mean this is her 2nd time around the ice....LOL

Actually ..looking at it again, I will be removing that straight line at the bottom, as it causes less stability in that area and is "Hinge-like".

This is a hinged panel project.  The hinge at the top still exists even though there are a couple vertical lines passing through it.  The vertical lines move it to a class B hinge in which it gets to bend/fold at a later date as opposed to the lower hinge.

But all is not lost if you mount the panel in a hard frame.  For example, the lower piece forms a hinge.  If both ends of that piece are mounted in the frame, the piece will be taken out of the hinge category.  If this is a small panel and a wooden frame is not available, a hard metal perimeter came can preserve the panels shape.  If it is a larger panel, that will not be true.

I think this still gives me the movement I'm looking for.

It is why it's called "figure skating". In years gone by, skaters had to perform "compulsory figures", where the skaters skated in prescribed patterns. They were judged, not just on their "form", but by the shape and clarity of the "figure" that their skates cut into the ice. The circles in your design are 5.9 (out of 6) for clarity and she gets 6.0 for form. She'd be well on her way to the podium under the old 6.0 scoring system of the time.
