I have to start thinking of ways to start using up some of my scrap pieces of glass...so....this is what I came up with today. All the glass was scrap except the clear base layer. I filled in the gaps with black glass powder. Once it was done it reminded me of the ancient mosaic plazas found in Italy. If it does not look good when done, I really have not lost much...but,.....if it turns out well, then I have a use for my scraps....nothing ventured, nothing gained. Plus, I've never used glass powder before, to it will be interesting to see what happens with that.

So the road to Pompeii isn't the one paved with good intentions.

I'm thinking now, maybe calling it "The Road Well Traveled"... Not quite the effect I was hoping to end up with. The black powder is darker than I expected it to be on the colored pieces of glass. I'm not sure if I like it or not...in one way I think it adds a little interest, in another way to me it looks like dirt. I suspect I will sandblast the tile area to take off the powder and also end up giving that area a satin finish leaving the rest of it shiny.

I like 'The Road Well Traveled' idea! Different! Around here we'd call it "Road sweepers' Strike" and everyone would understand at once!

I think it's very interesting. I think it would be more interesting if the "road" was not so wide and was a bit more winding. Not a bad experiment!

Actually it was not initially made as anything in particular, it was just the scrap shapes i had on hand that I put together..there was no thought out design plan in mind. I only called it "Road" because it reminded me of a swath of roadway.
Should I sand blast the dirt off or leave it?

I like the idea but the black powder does make it look dirty so sandblasting it off might be a good idea...
if you do another, try some bolder colors -- I think red, blue, yellow and green would make it pop

I like the black...I think it's what gives the piece added interest. I wouldn't sandblast it off.

Here is a pic of the backside which would give you an idea as to what it would look like on the front with all the "dirt" blasted off. I will have to blast it lightly because there is a small amount of devit where the black powder is, but I think I'm beginning to like the "Dirty" look, so will probably leave some. I want to blast a design into the large black area and leave it shiny while the rest will be a satin finish....I think....or leave the black shiny with a satin design and the road a satin finish as well.

IMHO, it doesn't have the interest this way.

The "dirt" does give it interest and makes it unique.

I did blast off some of it..I blasted the whole road to a matte finish and I'm really liking the contrast against the high gloss black. I think when I slump it I will decrease the time and temp in an attempt to keep it as matte as possible.
