I've been commissioned to make a wedding gift for a couple that just got married on "Big Corn Island", in  Nicaragua. He saw the previous piece I did for another wedding gift which was the beach piece with the starfish and writing in the sand.

This piece will feature a cut out for the placement of a picture frame on the back. There will be a silhouette of a palm tree, rocks in the water and a peninsula on the horizon. The water will have etched areas to resemble a light foam on the water near the shore, and on the waters edge. Once again, a heart with the happy couples names and the year, will be carved into the sand. Starfish might be added, but I am not sure yet.

Sounds good, you must pay a visit to a local photographer or three with samples in hand.

can't wait to see this finished and I really like the suggestion of taking a finished piece to a photographer - may give you more jobs then you can handle....

My "standard wedding gift" is the wedding invitation framed in something
original that has some connection to the couple taking the big leap. Bride's
fave flower, something related to their hobby or whatever.

Have made a number for friends and even more on commission.

Kev -- that sounds so cool!!!!   You're so talented --  you always think "outside the box", and we get to enjoy your journey along the way.  Don't forget a pic of the finished gift -- I'm sure they'll love it:)

Thanks guys.

This will prove to be a prototype for this type of frame. This actual piece is based on a photograph of the actual scenery from the island where they married.

This will be so special for them, and I agree about taking it to a photographer. It could lead to some very good opportunities.

Good thing this was a prototype. A few problems....

With this piece I used opal white as the base and added the transparent colored glass on top. As a result, some of the seams are noticeable and the bottom of the frame dipped into the horizon line. I also noticed there is a faint line running through the white base that is not a seam, but some type of flaw in the glass. As a result of these findings, I'm back to the drawing board in a few days to try the next one.

This time I will fire the color down with the white base on top to make the seams crisper on what will be the front side. I'm not worried about the texture it will pick up as it will be fired a few more times to complete the piece and should become shiny again with the colored side up. I've also readjusted some if the seams so that if they do show, they are more easily disguised with some etching or painting.

Maybe the 2nd time will be the charm. I'm going to have a little fun with the prototype and continue on with it, as it is still quite functional as a frame, but it will not be the piece intended for the happy couple.

I'm still trying to work it out in my head before the next go round. I still have not decided the best way to fuse it, or even what type of glass will give the best effect. I also need to look at the constructing of it and where the seams are falling...lots to think about....I'll keep at it till I get it worked out.
