I am so bamboozled by all the copyrite  stuff - that I hope I'm not doing the wrong thing here.
Having given my elder daughter the 'Spring Breeze' panel I made as a wedding present - I now need to make an equally meaningful one for my second daughter who is getting married in December.
She always loved a blocked poster that used to hang in our bar some 25 years ago entitled 'If you love it, let it go......'  She now has the (somewhat battered)  original, which bore no signature.   Attached is a photo of a painting she did of that poster.   I would like to reproduce a similar, if not exact copy as a glass panel.   Although I'm not terribly good at internet searching - I have turned up several similar picture in various mediums,  some free, some for sale.   I know that I have seen a s.g. pattern at least of the hands and dove somewhere in the past....I think it is called 'Hands of God'  or something like that ......if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful.
It will definately be a one-off for me - and not for sale , so in the absence of a copyrite-free pattern being available,  is it O.K. for me to create my own from the picture?
Thanks guys!

I can't be of any help, but that is an absolutely amazing picture. I can see why she loves it.

I have a pattern named Ascending Spirit, it's in a book and the dove is a Glasssmith bevel. Currently on a look/see for copyright.

Can't find anything except credits and there's nothing about resale or personal use.
Here's a pic.

It's in a couple of their books. The New Stained Glass and I think
Decorative glass, The New Stained Glass is a reprint of the latter.

Nice piece Yvonne and great idea, Beth.
What was the name of the book where you found Ascending Spirit?

The only thing I can think of it to write directly to the publisher and see if they can direct you to the artist to obtain permission.

Thank you so much for all the information, Yvonne!   That is exactly the pattern I remember seeing way back when our local book stores still stocked stained Glass books!   Just seeing it will help me design my own panel  (I hope!!)  Much appreciated!

I don't copy stuff exactly, because I have been hammered by the art world not to, that litigation is always a risk for anyone out there. But the ideas in this poster are not new. They were used heavily in the last century especially in Christian art.

Since I sell my work, it would bother me if some one copied directly from me and did not ask. But I would not sue them. Not everyone is like me though. Since it was published you also run the risk of trouble with the publisher. .......... Most likely it would NEVER become an issue and it should not, but today's world is so weird!!!!! And getting weirder. What is law now may be deemed different in 10 years. If you show us a picture of it have you then published it on line?

So I would take the concept and do your own version of it. The concept is what she loves. Don't look at the poster while working on your design. Photograph her daddies hands in a giving position. Take a photo of her and make it in the reaching up position. And then draw a dove. You can trace your own photos as well as someone else's. The drawings can be as realistic or as stylized as you like. The meanings will be that much deeper. You could even add her hubby to be in the picture. Get them to take an engagement photo looking off into the sunset or off some pretty scene. Trick her! Then use the photo with arms up in your design.

Yup! Judy,   I thought long and hard before putting that pic up here!!   In the end,  I'm hoping that as it's already Kelly's re-production of the cheep, unsigned poster of +25 years ago........
Anyway - it will never be for sale,  so I just sat down this morning and drew my own interpretation which is meant to symbolize me/us as parent letting Kelly (the dove) go for Ashley to keep safe in his hands.   Was going to take your advice and photograph Ian's hands .....but got impatient and just copied my own!   (sorry, Ashley if I have given you short, stubby hands!!)   Took further 'artistic license' in making the 're- leaser' slim with long hair.....after all a short tubby figure with short grey hair makes a far less appealing picture!!)
Having achieved this much - it's back to work on Christmas tinies whilst the brain(??) stews on glass choices from what I have on hand,  and actual execution issues.   As it cannot be very big - I'm considering overlaying.......
Keep ya posted!!  - and thank you for the input  - all advice welcome!
