Marsha,  the top is fired face up to the air leaving a shiny top.  The bottom is fired face down to the mold so it comes out of the mold with a matte finish.  To make them both look the same the bottom needs to be fire polished according to the instructions in the Box Basics project sheet.
http://www.colourdeverre.com/docs/33.pdf

I fire my 2 pieces in the same firing...they turn out just fine.  You may want to adjust your hold time if the top looks too "cooked".  The schedules in the project sheets are just a starting point...you have to find what works best for your kiln.

If the top is bumpy you might want to try refiring it to a higher temp and watch it closely till it smooths out then move on to the anneal.

These are turning out soooooooo cool. I would like to see it photographed on a piece of yellow leather, like shamy.

Very , very nice.

Judy, I searched the house for something artsy to photo it by....but all I could come up with was a bath towel!!!!  I'll take a better photo when I get something added to the top!

I like the towel.

I was just thinking of the purplish stone look. Purple and yellow are complimentary colors and stone and leather are natural. Too much yellow is over powering but shamy might really make that box pop. Just a thought. This photo is perfectly great, too.
