I have a client that is very interested in me reproducing my "Urban Rain" piece. It's been some time since I have sold a leaded piece. What's the going rates these days in regards to price per square foot and per piece? I'm looking at $30.00 - $50.00 /sq ft. and $3 - $3.50 / piece. What's your going rate?

I figure up the materials, then try to figure how much time it will take.  Then multiply the time by what I want an hour.

I've read some fairly heated discussions on this very subject. I've tried figuring it different ways and then comparing the prices. For the most part, they work out more or less the same. Kev, that's your original design, and a very good one. You're in an urban market area. I'd go with the $50./sq. ft. and $3.50/piece.
The few pieces I have in our local gift shop are priced lower, partly because I'm newer at this than you are, and the market here won't support those prices.

That's about what I was thinking Tre.

Rebecca,
Figuring out the hours would not work out well as I am probably slower than others with this, and have no idea how many hours it took me the last time. I appreciate the feedback though.

Shame on you Kev. You should be a good boy and do what Uncle Graham recommends: Keep track of every minutes and every cent that you spend on every project.

It's the only way you'll ever know if your making money, struggling to support a habit or just looking for an activity that doesn't require other people to be hanging around.

But for estimation purposes, I still use 60.00 per foot + 3.00 per piece. Both factors are subject to adjustment dependent on circumstances.

I have kept enough records to know that I work (leaded) at between 4 and 10 pieces per hour over the whole panel.  I have a good idea of what a 4 pices per hour window looks like as well as the rectangular glazed 10piece per hour window is.  I know that I need to be paid around £30 per hour to make a living.  If the glass is really expensive, then I add that to the price, otherwise I don't bother, because the glass is the smallest part of the cost.

I didn't say I actually KNOW how long it takes - I just think, hmmmm....  It looks like I should be able to do that in a couple of days, so let's put down sixteen hours and see if that makes a reasonable-looking number.  Exact times are hard because I am always being interrupted.  So two days worth of work might take me a week, but it's a starting point.

Yes, I know we are not doing this enthusiasm to complete time and motion sheets, but some accurate knowledge of how long it takes to do a job will transfer to others.  So it really does make sense to be very disciplined and record the actual working time on a sheet.  I would record my starting time and then note the time when I was interrupted. Then the new start time, etc.  It is tedious, but it does avoid the how much should I charge for this to make a profit question

I'm anal enough that when I first started, I actually timed each segment (ie. cutting, grinding, foiling...); as a result I have a pretty good idea how long it takes to make just about anything I do so I'm not as careful to do it now unless it is a "new" project for me (ie. mosaics, large panel, etc)

I just know I'm slow!
But then it's a hobby for me so I don't sell anything unless I'm pinned to the wall.

If you had one of those timers that you can hit a button and stop, then hit a button and start back; it would make timing easier.  I wonder where you would find one?

So tell me...if you can't remember to write down the time that you've worked then how are you going to remember to hit a stopwatch?  Hmmmm???
