Always make sure you are wearing UV protective glasses when viewing hot glass, as it gives off IR radiation and can damage your eyes.
When you buy welding glasses #4 or #5 for looking into a kiln they are rated for both UV and IR. So essentially what Kev said is correct. Ian, When I responded the recomendation was for UV. This is not adequate. It seemed to me that this is such an important thing, that I was blunt. I see it has now been changed. This is an advantage to the internet - things can be corrected quickly.Stephen we value your input but do try not to word your posts such that they come across as condescending or making people look stupid. We are trying on this board to get people to ask questions without them being afraid of getting sarcastic or impatient or condescending replies. If my response was taken as condescending, then I will wear it, for the importance of the matter required bluntness. It was important.Always remember that when you reply on any board that people cannot see your eyes or face so anything that you type is taken at face value and can easily be misconstrued and hurt people. Anyone reading the whole post would see that there was some humour in the post - I indicated that I did not use glasses (although of course I should). My impression of this board is that it is for people who, first, want to be friends and be sociable , second to learn and third to be treated as equals even if you are a newbie or not. Ian, safety is not something that should take second or thrid to socialibility, equiability, or any other -bility.Thanks Ian PS I would'nt recommend looking through a peephole without protection, not even for a second. Been there done that and had a blank spot in my eye for a couple of days So my writing style is pretty assertive, and not concerned with the social niceities(sp). I am here to learn - and I do - not socialise. If the moderators are unhappy with my behaviour, they can take me off the board. So, I guess I am unapologetic about pointing out something that might have caused injury if left alone.

OK, Here my question. How exactly do you use the peephole plugs besides peeping in the kiln? I have seen a reference to keeping them out until some point in the bringing and taking out at some point in the end.
I see where the question was posted to CC's question, but how does that work with this link?

Look in FAQ's to see the question that was added there for future users to find the info quickly.
The answer to the question is in the child board "Glass fusing 101"

I stand corrected, and corrected my mistake when pointed out to me. As you can see I struck out the mistake and did not remove it. I made my comment based on the information I had when I bought my glasses. Unfortunately, not all the information we get is correct or complete, hence the benefit of these forums and the members that contribute.
There are many ways to convey information, bluntness and assertiveness is not really necessary here as most of us here are learning and are bound to make mistakes, for which we are appreciative of your, and others assistance.
From the inception of this forum, it was set up to be a sociable/learning forum. Whether members choose to socialize or not is up to them. I, and others do appreciate member participation and sharing of knowledge.
As a reminder to all members: Every member is to be respectful of others, whether they are lacking correct information, make mistakes or not, when the information is posted with the best of intentions.

Gotcha!!!! I just found the fusing questions in the FAQ in the Fusing section.
Do you have to enter each question manually into the appropriate FAQ section? If so, that'll keep you even more on your toes than you already are, lol.

Great thread guys!!!!!!!!! Good glasses info. I like my welding goggles, and need a second pair to keep near my second kiln instead of always running them back and forth. Even better thread for watching how everyone resolved peacefully differing communication styles. You are all awesome!

Members will ask their question in the regular hot glass board in this thread designed specifically for questions.
From that point on, members may reply to the question with the information pertaining to the specific question.
Once the question has begun to be answered, then the original question or the essence of it will be posted in the FAQ section by the mods of this board, at which time they will supply the link to the original question and where the answer is.

My glasses are #3 as recommended by Paragon on their website. I bought them from Clayking with my kiln. http://www.clay-king.com/equiplist.htmI was also told by the guy there never to peek without them, but then I was told not to stare into the glory holes in the glass factories 35yrs ago. Good info here, thanks for spotting the mistake Stephen.
