We took a little drive Saturday and saw a ptarmigan couple. Can you see his furry feet?
The all white girl Ptarmigan is in the background. She goes straight from her winter whites to camo/speckle brown. The boy first gets his dark head and red eye, to attract her. Then he turns camo too. They raise their chicks together and then separate in the fall.
Nancy, I thought of you a lot that day. Spring is a good time. We were high in the tundra and a very black storm was rolling over us. I love the black/purple clouds behind the white mountains. For a few minutes, sun found a hole and made the white tops almost blinding against the black clouds. We had hail that made the road white. It was a good little 1/2 hr cruise.

We also came across a few caribou. And a snow shoe hare was waiting for us at home when we arrived. Then it began snowing hard and the world returned to deep winter for a quick nap.
The Ptarmigan and the Hare will turn brown for summer. It has already begun.

Judy, you have really captured him. I like the black & white with the colored framing him.

Thanks , isn't he sweet. It lets me get very close to it. It makes me wonder sometimes. We had 3 hares last summer by the end of the driveway. One day I woke to a horrible noise to find the cat had trapped a Baby under my window. I saved it as 2 watched from the end of the drive standing tall on their back feet. So I talk sweet to them when I see them now and they seem to tolerate me Soon this one will be all brown. Others are already.

There is a nature park here. The deer will walk right up to you. One day when my son was little, we were there on a trail and saw a rabbit very close. We stopped to watch it and it hopped TOWARD us. We both had on flip flops and it came up and sniffed our toes! It finally left when we couldn't stand the tickling of our toes and started laughing.
