I have been approached by my local glass shop to do some blasting of cabinet doors for a client they have. At this point I am still gathering more information as in, is it a design, or a complete etching or the glass.

My dilemma is..what do I charge per sq foot. Figuring time and x number of dollars per hour is difficult as I have not done this before and do not know how long git will take...of course this is a good opportunity to figure that out, and if I come up short, I'll know better the next time.

Any one have any ballpark figures what the going rates are?

I think that Graham would be the one to answer this question.  It seems he has a lot of back ground in this.

Kev I am happy for you that this seems to be rolling into another area to bring you in a few coins to keep you going on your way as you develop your business.  With what you have already posted of your creations you should be able to do very well with this new toy of yours, good for you Friend.

I'm hoping so Joan. I could use a little pay back for all the money I've sunk into this glass addiction so far. I'm truly hoping that with all the possibilities of combining different applications, that i will be able to create something uniquely mine.

If I had to guess, and that's all I can do, is whatever you charge for two sets of coasters then charge that per square foot. Even though two sets of coasters doesn't equal out to a square foot in inches I'd guess that it's even out but the fact that your not dealing with as many smaller prices, rather full size cabinet doors.

And keep in mind, I have no idea about sand carving or what you charge for coasters :P, it's just a start :).

Really hard to say, Kev.
My inclination would be to take your best guess at the time it will take, based on your few experiments. (You didn't keep track, did you. You naughty boy) plus material (stencil material)

And work out an "Overhead figure" including let's say 2% of your equipment cost, 5% of the cost of your blast medium.

It's not perfect, but it's a jumping off point. Per sq.ft. sounds logical but designing, cutting and blasting depend on how much of the area is actually to be blasted, and how deep you're cutting, so that kind of a formula sucks unless you have the experience to lean on to adjust the variables.

Explain to your client, that your price is your best guess. If he says "Shit, Kev!! I can't afford something like that!!" you might have to return to the drawing board.

Believe it or not,  I thought about that to Vic but I wasn't sure how eager the competition would want to share.

I did a little check on line and came across this. I'm not sure if this will help but you might want to pose your question there at warmglass.com.

And if he's cheap enough, let him do it and you can just mark his price up, and pocket the diff.
You can get experience on the next job. grin
