The ptarmigan is our state bird. I started this at Christmas time but never finished it. While I was fining Jesus's paint I also finished the Ptarmigan. It has a first layer of line work, and then a matt of black followed by a matt of bister brown.

First I full fused the blank glass with two layers of clear and strips for layers on the outside. At the same time I fired in the red spot for the eye and some white frit for feathers and snow.

Front and back lighting make a big difference with this piece.

You did a wonderful job on this Judy.  Great deal of detail in the bird.  Love the plaid trim framing

This is lovely too, Judy.  I find the stripes a bit distracting and not totally in keeping with the soft lines of the painting but the painting itself is wonderful.

Is all the white frit, or is some paint?

The stripes is a valid observation. I am not sure I like them. But I like the idea of a fused frame work to paint outside the boundries of.

Yes all the white is frit.

I think your idea of fused frame work is a good one.  There's so much contrast in this piece that my eye keeps going to the stripes and away from the wonderful painting.

I like the frame but not for this piece as it does take your eye away from the beautiful bird.

I like the frame as I think its a real visual contrast, and to me adds a feeling of depth to the piece, as if one is looking through and beyond the frame to see the bird.

It gives me the feeling of looking out a window on a winter's day. I don't know if you planned that perception or not Judy, but I think you did a wonderful job on that:) I especially like the shadings of the feathers. As Kev mentioned, you gave this piece a nice sense of depth.

Thanks guys, I have been looking at the frame a lot and decided I like it. Mostly I like using frit and paint together. The white really sings in the right light. And the red eye could not have been done as well with paint.
