My freind's kittens decided to redecorate her tree whilst she was at work! What I found interesting was how this (and another) sand blasted star broke. Obviously they fell points down, but I have never seen a break right up the sides along the foil like this. Was it just coincidence - or can anyone provide a technical reason? I wondered if maybe a little too much heat when soldering 'weakened' the sandblasted glass, as presumably sandblasting affects the surface of the glass to some degree anyway? I always want to know 'why', although I do know that with glass there is not always an answer! p.s. - I did'nt make the stars.!

After looking at the pic, it just seems to me that the law of stress points (if there is such a law) made the foil push away from the glass based on where it struck the floor. The sharp points of the glass appear to have made the foil push away on both outside edges.
Of course the foil didn't appear to have adhered as well as it should have and that could have been caused by several issues. First the sandblasting of the glass..was it completely clean, as in washed extremely well to remove sandblast material and/or glass, how well was the foil burnished? How old was the foil used? Oil residue off the hands that wasn't washed off prior to foiling? There are any number of reasons why the foil didn't stick.

made the foil push away from the glass
De [/quote]
The glass has actually fractured right up the side along the foil line (pretty much as Yvonne says!) There is actually a thin sliver of glass left in the foil. Must have just fallen at precisely the right angle!

Yes, I only noticed at first the break on the tip of the left point..but looking closely I can see some of the glass still in the foil..hummm..I still stand by the fact that it must have dropped straight down and you're right, have to have hit the floor at pricisely the correct angle...
So it had less to do with the foil and more to do with the stress/impact concussing the two bottom points.

Well.. when the star fell, the glass fairies rushed out and tried to stop the whole thing from shattering. Being tiny things, they could only do so much. So while the foil was pulled out, the glass (the ultimate goal) was saved. These, by the way, are the same fairies that come in the night and make your glass look so much better in the morning than it did last night when you were tired. They are related to, but only by marriage, to the paint fairies and the shoe elves.

Tre I admire your ability for whimsy! I'll bet those helpful angels are cousins to the shoe elves, the paint fairies and lets not forget the tooth fairy. De

You're probably right , Tre V! I have a whole host of faeries around here - as well as goblins, elves - - and a big ogre too!

You know, I, of all people, have never heard of the Chocolate Chip Fairies...but upon second thought they must be the ones that keep eating that bag of Chocolate Chips I intended to use to bake cookies with.
I'd say off hand they must be 2nd cousins to the pixies...your thoughts?

What did the old crims call the brick in the sock? A jar of Nuttella would be much the same and solve the mystery of where that missing sock went. Ohhh I just remembered the Bureau of Missing Socks, I wonder if they are still out there on the web.

Those glass fairies that make your glass look better in the morning??? I've got their cousins - the ones that make it look WORSE in the morning. Tre, I will trade you TWO sock-stealing faries ( I have plenty) for ONE glass fairy. Now THERE'S a deal you can hardly refuse.

I am surprised you would suggest such a thing! I need to work on your repair training. Come on down and I will work on your lead training, too. Rebecca

I would come in a heartbeat if I could. And maybe I need to look at that seriously, but ................. how is she going to replace the sandblasted peices and match them in grit. The cracks are so close to the edge, you would not glue them? What then? .............. do you know how to contact the Cracked Fairies?

Relax, ladies! Fortunately my freind does'nt want the stars repaired. I'm just going to cut guardian angel wings from them. I'm big into recycling - especially glass! Hopefully this will keep the faeries AND the angels happy! Double whammy!!!!

Recyle, Reuse, that's my motto too, and you'd believe it if you could see all of the itty bitty pieces of glass, tiny bits of wire and all else I have in this shop. But it's a good thing and you'd be surprised (or maybe not) how many times I've used some of the "saved" items.
Good for you Elizabeth! De

Not one bit surprised, De! I still use odds & sods and tools from my cake decorating days -almost a decade ago. Apart from the diluted 'Scottish blood' and being a natural squirrel - my daughter makes useable/saleable items from trash for a living, which has given me a whole new take on 'trash'! Just can't win in the neat & tidy house dept, tho'!!

tee, hee, I too am of the Irish/Scottish and grew up with a mother that lived during the end days of the great depression..ugh, talk about learning from a pro how to 'hang onto' stuff. In my next life I'm going to learn how to toss more out.
Nope the neat and tidy house thing is on occasion stretching it very far! LOL.
Great minds! De

If there's more of the sand blasted glass, just replace the pieces. If there's no more sand-blasted glass, place the star carefully into the trash bin. and make another of different glass. This is hardly worth a repair, and certainly not a complicated one. No disrespect intended, but this is hardly a tiffany treasure. Oh, and why did it break that way? It landed points-first on a hard surface.
