Thanks Graham:) I've never cut a long metal screw to length before. Do you use a hack saw? How do you make sure the threads at the newly cut end will still thread into a brass nut? As in not damaging the threads when I cut it to length:)

Hacksaw works fine. File off the burrs.
Brass is pretty soft. and threads can be "pushed back" to the correct shape by turning a suitably threaded steel nut over the squiggly thread. when cutting off a piece, always leave one end with good thread, so you can turn the steel nut onto the tube.

I got a 22" wooden disc to go with it. Can I use that size of disc for a 20" diameter shade and smaller?

Yep, 22" is fine.

Nancy, I have several different lengths of the brass rod I use.
The first one you should create/cut is the one which is about 4" taller than the mold/form you will be using.  I usually have one for the 22" dia shades and use it for everything I can.  If they are too long they get in the way and when, on small forms, they are in the way, I use a shorter length.  I always have some around (cutoffs actually) that are 4-7" .  I use those when I attach the shade via the top so that I can solder the inside or the border of the shade.

The large disk will work for all the shades smaller than 22" but it becomes a pain since it is so very wide.  If you buy wholesale, the precut 1/4" discs are really cheap and do not warrant me to cut them myself.  I have about 4-5 sizes I use.  I do  not want the thicker discs either since these work very well.

BTW, before you cut the rod, place a steel nut on the rod in the area.  After cutting the rod screw the nut off the end you cut.  The nut will straighten out the brass threads that are messed up by the hacksaw.

...don't tell me than now! lol

That's a super deal if someone is interested. I did get those things wholesale so I might get a smaller disc next time.

Thanks for the info:) I'm really looking forward to trying them out. grin

I cut one with a hack saw.  I was worried about the threads, too.  I screwed a fitting onto the uncut end and kept screwing until it came off of the cut end.  Either that straightened out the threads or there wasn't a problem to start with.  A 22-inch circle will work fine with any size because it can only turn ninety degrees anyway.  You will have to reach a little further with a small shade on a big circle when it's in the vertical position, but not a problem.

Thanks Rebecca. I went into town today and found a 3/8" - 36" long threaded brass rod so I'm all set:)
