Dan's main computer just went on the fritz so I'm on the laptop right now. I'm hoping we can save the recent photos we've been adding for the last couple of months. Toes and fingers are crossed. At least 90% of the pics have been saved into the external hard drive! ...whewww..

Thanks for your comments:) I didn't work on the shade today but should be able to  get back to it tomorrow.

... and Rebecca knows them fairly well, as do I! I highly recommned them for supplies and entertainment.

Yes Nancy Whittemore Durgin can be entertaining as well as a sg/supply source.  Treat yourself and order their catolog.  I was really entertained by it as well as learning about the different glass types way back even before I started actually doing glass.

Thanks for that shade link Tod!
Getting their cataloque is a good idea Joan. I'll have to do that.

Here's where I am with that shade right now. Only 190 pieces left to do. Then I'll mark out where the vase cap comes down to on the form, tin it and start to do some soldering on the shade to stiffen it up before removing it from the form.

Thanks for your comments:)

Thank goodness for this laptop!!!

Sooooo sorry to hear about Dan's computer, have you been able to figure out what is wrong with it yet?

Oh my Lord, Nancy, you are quick.  How many hours does this represent so far, if you don't mind me asking.  You really have me hooked on trying one sooner than later.

Any suggestions from the lamp makers would be appreciated.  Maybe in a different thread, so we don't hog this one.  Would love to hear some tips, things to avoid, and what size and style one should start with when attempting a domed lampshade.

Looking beautiful. What patience that must take for all those pieces. I could never do it.

Your lamp is looking good Nancy!  This is a great thread!  Glad you started this one.  It's making me want to start something small before I tackle the larger forms I have.  I've put it off and put it off, have all the glass ready and everything..just trying to find the motivation.  Which you are most graciously providing!

Hope all turns out well with the computer.  The lamp sure is.

I don't mind chatting in here about how I make this lamp:) I spend about 4-5 hours a day on it so I can stop and do other things. I don't need to have this shade done until April, but I have a number of other projects that need to get done before I return back to Canada, so now's the time for this.
Today, I had another drop going in the kiln so I had to keep an eye on that until the drop length was done, so the day has been broken up a bit.
Also, a local came over to look at Dan's computer (...gadsfrey he talks ALOT!:) ...so I worked while he talked about everything and nothing. Dan stood by and did the appropriate uh-uhs, and oh-yas, lol. To make a very long story short, he THINKS its the hard-drive and offered to run it into a computer shop for us. No problems with saving the existing programs and photos, so that's a relief.

Thanks Anne, Audrey and Deeee:)

That's it! Start small and maybe use a simple grid design so you can get the hang of how to solder on a curve. When I start soldering, I'll show some pics. I don't have the lamp leveller that Worden has (would love one tho!), but in the mean time, I use a simple gig  that isn't expensive.

Panel lamps is another idea to consider.

I've done a few panel lamps, and I've done several repair jobs on some dome lamps..I don't have a gig or the Worden lamp leveler..although I know I saw a homemade one online somewhere.  It looked like a lot of work to manufacture it..sometimes I'm lazy..LOL.  For the most part, many of the lamps I've worked on have just been leveled up inside a cardboard carton filled with newspaper.  That seems to work..eh..ok for me.

I've never done a dome lamp from start to finish though...going to have to start sometime soon though.  As I said, I've got some scrumptious Youghiogheny waiting in a closet to start a Dragonfly lamp.  You've given me food for thought as they say!  Thanks Nancy!!

Nancy, et al:
Speaking of Whittemore Durgin, here's their lamp book for sale on ebay. It comes up occasionally; I'm pretty sure I have a copy, but don't remember if the hard molds are featured. Probably. It was written by their founder (I think) Jim Hepburn who I met a time or two on visits to WD in the '70's. He's retired now and the company is now being run by his very capable daughter Kathleen.

Nancy, your lamp just looks better and better. For all the bragging I've done about my remarkable patience, I've never even considered a large lamp! ;- }

It's lovely, the colors really compliment each other. I also like the way you 'popped' the arc over the line rather than keep it in line like it was scribed. What color are the jewels?

Thanks Yvonne and Di:)
The client picked a navy blue and cherry red for that detailed part of the design, so the nuggets are a cherry red as well.

I used crumbled up newspaper within a large container as well, but wait until you see what I found:) Part of it are those foamy black wedgies. Know about those?

I think I know the dragonfly shade you're talking about. That'll be a charmer for sure.
The person I'm making this for has a budget so I've used mainly Spectrum and Wissmach.

Youghiogheny would be wonderful in that shade De.

Getting itchy yet? Giggle
Hope some of the photos will help:)
