This is what I have been working on. I will hang it in the master bath in front of the bottom pane. That is if I ever get it framed. I have been putzing with it for most of the day and came upstairs frustrated. The 1/4" copper u channel is not big enough and the other that I have is the 1/2". Never done the bigger channel so I left it alone before I screw it up. The panel is 15x24.

What problems are you having with the zinc?
When you say that the 1/4" came isn't big enough, do you mean that the came won't slip over the outer edge of the glass? Usually, when I frame panels, I stop the soldering to within about 1/2" from the outer edge so that the came can be easily slipped on. If that's the case, then you could remelt the solder (at the ends of the soldered seams) and just pull the solder away by using the flat of your iron tip and out at a right angle from your seam. In other words, visualize the letter L - the seam is the upper part and then with the iron, pull away the solder from the bottom edge of the seam, dragging the excess solder as you go pull the iron tip off the seam.
Another thing you can do is spread open the came up along the inner seam, but only enough so the glass can slip inside the channel with a lathekin or a wooden tapered fid.
Another size of came that might go well for that size of panel is some 3/8's. Graham has a nice tutorial on how to miter a corner. Try it out on some scrap first to get a feel for the technique.

Nansea I have I think the real shallow, probably 1/8" I call it zinc but this is actually copper u channel, I did stop a little from the end of the seams so the channel would go on easily but, and this is the problem I think, It's water glass completely around all the edges and it's not enough to neatly go around the edges in some parts. I have a larger size and it's probably the 1/2" to 5/8th". I look at this and it looks too big for this size panel, so I am going to leave it be till I can figure out what to do. Maybe look up the different size it comes in, Thanks for trying to help.

The zincs are going to have a 1/8" over the glass piece plus the addtional part not on the glass, that is, they all cover the same amount of glass, 1/8". |
