I've managed to accumulate a ton of scrap glass and I haven't been able to sell any of it, and I'm getting tired of doing scrap projects and I hate to throw it away so I've decided I have to learn how to do mosaics....

What is the easiest thing to put a mosaic on as a first project?

thanks

If it is going to be an inside mosaic, you can use thick wood or MDF which has been primed (not painted).   3/4" plywood is sturdy and when sealed with Kiltz 2 primer, it is ready to be used as a substrate.  You then need a glue and the most commonly used inside glue is Weldbond.

Before you begin, determine whether you will want to frame the mosaic.  If you do, cut the substrate to fit the frame first.  If you do not wish to frame it, determine how you will finish the edge of the substrate.

thanks Wayne,

I'm thinking I might look in hubby's scrap wood pile and see if there is something there that could be made into a nice tray... which should solve the finishing issue on this one...

if I can't find something to use for a tray and end up making a trivet instead, what are my options for finishing the edges?

don't hold your breath waiting on me... I have a box of my own, a box from my mom and a box from her instructor so I have well over 50 lbs of it and I've made sure it is all bigger than a quarter so it is all very usable...

I did a mosaic on an old coffee table and I ended up putting thin wood strips around the edges for a nice frame around the table.  I forgot what kind of trim it was...just the smallest size I could get at Lowes.  It was easy to cut, I just used a miter box saw and used liquid nails to glue it to the table.  I did it 3 years ago and it's still holding up great.  The photo isn't very good...just shows what the frame looks like from the top.  Hope this helps. :)

that's pretty cool Meaco...

I might look for wood that is only half inch or so thick I can use molding as well for my frame to finish off the side edges...

I'm really thinking a trivet is what I want to make...

Here is a snipit of a Magnolia mosaic which shows the alternative method.  Still the substrate is sealed as mentioned above.  Also, sealing the grout when the mosaic is done is important.  If the piece is for display, the seal keeps the grout from staining.  If the piece is to be used around food or humans, the proper sealant keeps the grout safe from bacteria.  TilLab is one such sealer.
