Hi, I'm Shirley living in Australia (obviously!). Started glass in '79, having been a Spinner and Weaver for yonks and "real job" as a Dairy Technologist. Was changing states and didn't know what work options there would be so got my Dad to teach me leadlight. Ended up going to Stained Glass Painting classes, then to college to do Vis Art (SG major) Post grad in Kiln Fired Glass/Sculpture then lectured at Uni in "all things glassy", had own studio doing Church Restoration, domestic commisions/repairs and teaching but trying to be single Mom and a woman working from home didn't make it easy ...ppl then just classified it as my hobby and wouldn't pay! Was very fortunate to get to Pilchuck to do Sandblasting and Enamelling on Vessels with Susie Shapiro and have done workshops with many of the greats. (so blessed!) Am now fulltime caring for 88yo parents in very failing health so not doing much creative stuff...oh also broke my ankle 6 weeks ago (mushed is prob a better description!). When all this is over I am moving to New Zealand, setting up my glass and fibre studios again and hopefully enjoying my future :)

The "having done a lot" comes with the grey strands I reckon (hehe) but, yeah, when I look back now I don't think I really appreciated all the opportunities I had. You name 'em I reckon I've done a workshop with them! But hubby walking out and leaving me with a 4 yo etc meant I didn't capitalize on them as much as I poss could have. (She's now 25!!!) Soon....I'll get to take advantage of all the info in my head, which I am really happy to share as well. Ankle ...mmm... learning how to walk again! But it IS getting there. Am now putting a bit of weight on it. ...and thx for the invite ... I haven't done anything like this before lol. (only fb) so it might take me a bit to get the hang of it!

LOL..well Shirley, while you're healing you'll have plenty to do to keep busy (in and around your schedule with your parents) between here and FB. I've no doubt that you'll catch on to the forum pretty quickly...lol, after all you're pretty FB literate and this isn't much different. (Except we can add all manner of movable graphics to these posts.) Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to AOG!! De

I'm Mike and have done stained glass on and off since the 70,s. I have worked as an Auto body tech for 40yrs and now that MY body is worn out, I will set aside more time for this craft. I also do fused glass jewelry and tried my hand at lamping but I,m not quite set up for that at this time. Also want to learn more about "glass plating".

Welcome, Shirley & Mike! Looks like we have a lot of input and sharing to look forward to.!!! I think a lot of us have come to glass via many other avenues.....and it's amazing how one can use knowledge/tools/experience gained in other seemingly dis-similar occupations/crafts to enrich and enhance working with glass.
