I just finished this little pair. The butterfly is from some scrap glass that I got out of one of my Craigslist scrounges-so I have no idea what it is, though I do like it a lot. Unfortunately, I only have a few smallish scraps of it. I made this for a friend for Christmas. Her kitty is a cream colored fellow-and I know she likes cat stuff. Her Simon, however, would not be calmly and gently reaching for the butterfly. He would scream "bonzai" in cat and leap with all four claws extended to the fullest (and miss). I have to admit, I keep getting further and further behind on Christmas plans. I have not finished the glass I want to do, I haven't even STARTED on making jam/jelly and I am not sure how I got this far behind before we even got to Halloween. So I guess it is a good thing that I have at least this item done. :>

your friend will see your gift as very special because you are giving her something she loves. Very cute, and I love the story about the cat too.
Christmas, heck I haven't even thought about it yet, so you are ahead of me LOL

Thanks all-I do think she will like this. And I am really happy to have (finally) started on my holiday stuff.
And thanks for IDing the glass!!! I do really like it...but one of the downsides of getting a lot of my stuff from Craigslist is that it is tough to know exactly what it is that I have on hand sometimes. :> I suppose at about 1/4 the price at a store (or less), I won't complain too much.

Love that Fremont and the first chance I get..or place I find a piece I'm going to have some of that..it would look great as a background glass for one of my designs..with the racehorses.
But...the glass that the butterfly is made of looks much denser than the Fremont actually is. I originally guessed perhaps a Youghi..but I'm not totally convinced of that either.
Nice job Lynn, it always feels great to get something done doesn't it!

I think that's great that you were able to get a goodie bag from craigslist, Lynn. Interesting way to get suprises:) Keep a piece of each of your favourites and when in doubt of what it is, take it to your local stained glass retail shop for identification. Notice that the colour density of that piece of Fremont and of that butterfly De? Some areas of the glass is totally different from the next which is why it's a good idea select it in person if possible. It reminds me of a school of fish - denser colour patches at one point and spreads out more in another section. It would be really fun for you to get some of that:) You'll fall in love with it and sounds like an interesting choice for your racehorse panel. When I first posted that Fremont photo here, I had never worked with it. Then Tod told me how special that glass is and that it cuts like butter. http://artisansofglass.com/index.php/topic,740.0.htmlHe was right! Kinda pricy but fabulous stuff!!!!! For sure I'll get more from my supplier when I go there this fall. They sell it by the pound at Hoy's if I remember right. Thanks again for that previous info Tod:) Loooove that kitty-kat and flutter-friend:)

I'll have to read the link about it thanks for posting that. I've seen Fremont up close, and loves the colors in it..should have bought it when I saw it...drat it. My only question here was that Lynn had told me that the glass was much thicker than the other glass that she was working with. And Fremont has a transparency to it that this glass didn't strike me as having..I guess it's possible that's what it is. Can't wait to buy a piece of it. Yes, Hoy's does have it, but considering the $$ and that I'm not ordering enough from them these days..well I'll just have to see if I can get a smaller piece of it somewhere local if I can.

Hiya De, One of Tod's comments was "Be aware of the varying thicknesses, too, as this is a true antique glass."

Hiya De, One of Tod's comments was "Be aware of the varying thicknesses, too, as this is a true antique glass." I didn't notice varying thickness on this glass....but I did only have some pretty small scraps of it that I got in the bundle, so that may not really mean much other than MY bits were pretty uniform. I need to stop by my store this weekend for some other stuff, so I will take a look and see if she carries the Fremont glass. If I can see it in person, I can probably determine if it is the right stuff or not. If she doesn't have the Fremont in stock, then all bets are off! :>

I actually have 3 pieces of Fremont and the thickness does vary quite a bit throughout the pieces. Awesome glass though and it is very easy to work with.

For everyone who was asking.... I took a close look at all five of the little pieces of the 'butterfly' glass I have (the largest one is a little bigger than my palm...and I only have one that large), I can say with some confidence that it is, indeed, the Fremont glass. One-It just plain looks like the same glass. Two-There is some variation in thickness, though it isn't too pronounced over such small scraps. Three-The clue that really clinches it, there is a half of a tag from the dealer on it that says "Frem (then the take breaks off) and on the next line "mu" (and again the tage breaks off). I think that is a pretty clear sign. Thanks again!

LOL. I'd say that completely answers that question and proves that my old eyes are failing me...need stronger glasses I guess. I've got to get some of that glass. I just love it.
