also as far as jack chain, look for a small hardware store -- I buy mine for $.10/ft at the local hardware LA
Do you mean a store like Lowe's Lou Ann - or a local all hardware place?

10¢ a foot!!! ...holy moly! I'll definitely keep my eyes open but haven't found that kind of price in Iowa yet. At Menards or another hardware store called Theison's, goes for 35¢ a foot. Up here in my area it sells for a $1.00 a meter, and even up to $1.25. *calculation - a meter is a little less than 39½"*, so better that I get it from the states. How much is size #16 jack chain out your way Anne?

But I really appreciate this info, we'll go shopping before I go to my suppliers.

My suppliers chain prices are still abit pricy compared to the local shops, so that's why I shop around first as well. If you're lucky enough to find a hardware store either moving or going out of business, you'll find some amazing deals that way to. I've been to 2 such places last year and I got the wildest collection of fasteners, chains, rings...you name it.

It's the regular #16 jack chain you generally find at a hardware shop. Some are coated, gold coloured, some made out of zinc, another says they're iridescent. There are other sizes available, but the #16 gauge (10 lbs) works well for small/medium sized panels. I use a heavier oval shaped chain (bronze coloured - ¾"x¼") that I got from Ed Hoy's for the larger panels. The black chain is a #14 steel black polycoated and good for up to 16lbs. So yes, some are plated.

I've bought the Bulldog ird. in Walmart, 16g - 20ft for $4. I also like the brass clock chain for small items, I know black or copper might look better in the hand but at 10 paces its barely noticeable. I scored today, told a guy to 'leave his droppings on the floor!' So, when he had finished relocating and rewiring the sat-tv I had a tidy heap of 12-16g copper wire! He also had a junk pile in his truck that he kindly unloaded on me! I'm not suggesting you go stalking electricians but never let an opportunity get past you.
