I loved Becki's post showing the colors she's trying on her new dish and didn't want to get the topic side tracked so I came here. I'm making the leap and buying a kiln and ordering glass and supplies so I can fire at home *woohoo*  and as much as I'd love to order everything and all colors of glass I can't *lol. So I've been going through and selecting a color palette of colors to work with that will make a nice collection and most glass will work well with each other.

I'm hoping maybe folks could share pics of things they fired with color names so maybe I can see how things really look rather then a color chip on the screen.

This is my palette too if anyone has pics with one or more of these: (black, white and clear are on the order too.)

Cathedral                                  Opal                 Opal Art
steel blue                               turquoise blue                   orchid
dark purple                                mauve                         cascadia
antique bronze                           khaki
teal green                                   lilac
champagne                                stone

Awesome Amber..glad to see you make the leap and get one of your own...so much more convenient having it at home and having control of the firing cycle yourself. ...way to go girl! So...what are you getting?

Good for you, Amber.  The only way you'll have control over your work is to do it yourself!  I've got some pics in my gallery album...not sure if it covers the colors you've chosen but you're welcome to take a look!

That's terrific and you have the talent.  Good things are ahead for you. I only do cold glass so I can't help you with the color palette of fired pieces. I wish you the best in your endeavor.

Amber, these aren't the greatest pics but here are a few with the transparent colors you're asking about. #1 has the steel blue and dk purple, #2 is teal green and lilac and #3 is teal gr and dk amber.

I'm really excited and right now I'm all over the place on what kiln *lol, literally. These are my options so far that I've narrowed it down to.

Olympic 146GFTLC, new, 3-key controller, 14.5" by 6.5" deep for 998.00 (everything included, furniture kit, tax, delivery) From BC
Evenheat Hot Shot 14-6, new, rampmaster controller, 14 " by 6", $1150.00 (this one will come to me without a mark-up, furniture, tax delivery, straight from Hollander in TO)
Paragon Touch N Fire DTC100, used, sentry controller, 15" by 12", $500.00 (no tax, shipping extra but I'm waiting for an email from Paragon to see if I have to change controllers to make it glass friendly, if so it's out of the running.) From North Bay, ON

Hey Becki, I was in your gallery and I'm wondering what you used for the dark red in your sugar candy bowl?? I like it, some color chips look a bit orange when I see them.

That is System96 transparent cherry red, 151SF.  It's a real pretty red.

I've never heard of that particular Paragon kiln.  How old is it?

The Paragon one was a toughy  for finding info. I can find the controller info when I searched for it but I think it's either discontinued or has been upgraded and given a new name cause I couldn't find any of the DCT line other then manual info from Paragon. I think it's a few years old, still talking to the owner, was originally used for porcelain dolls and then her mom stopped using it after a dozen or so times. The kiln is a good size so I'm hoping that the controller is glass friendly, if so I just may get this kiln since it's better priced but I'm still waiting for a few more quotes to come in before I make my pick. The nice thing is I also got a hold of someone local whose willing to sell me his molds cheap since he's only doing restoration work in the province now.

I don't know who you emailed at Paragon but Arnold Howard can probably tell you what you need to know.  ahoward@paragonweb.com

Remember...heat more slowly in a kiln with only side elements.  Even heating is important for glass.

Actually now that you mention it, I game for going slower but can you recommend a good place to start with?? I'm not sure if it's something that should go at say 275, (and keep all other ramps slow too), to start or is that not slow enough you think? And after I reach my peak temperature can I go back to a regular schedual to take it down or should I still go slow?

Actually I can't...that comes from getting to know your particular kiln. Slowing down the heating in a kiln with only side elements keeps the edges of the glass from heating too quickly and unevenly.  Schedules are going to depend on how your particular kiln fires, the type of glass used, size and thickness, etc. I have a glass kiln with elements in the top so my schedules won't necessarily work in your kiln or anyone elses...glass kiln or not. That's where testing comes into play.

A good source of info on knowing your kiln is on the Bullseye glass site.  http://www.bullseyeglass.com/pdf/technotes_tipsheets/TechNotes_01.pdf

You can do this!   smiley

Well looks like it doesn't matter about lowing down cause that kiln's crossed off the list *L. Got an email back from Paragon and the controller isn't glass compatible and I'd have to replace it, even going wit a 3-key will cost me about 500 bucks and I'm just not interested. So I have one or two more quotes to come in and then I'll be making my pick :)!!

Got my baby on order :) . Going for the 14.5" square Skutt Fire Box 14 120 volt and I'm driving to Halifax on the 26th to pick it up  cheesy . I also talked a local man whose selling me a bunch of his fusing glass and accessories and is willing to give me a deal since "everyone needs a break".  He knows I have a really tight budget and that I'm trying to do a lot with my few dollars and for him he's just not using the items any more and has just been focusing on restorative work in the province.
Wahoo, I'll be fusing by the months end in my own home  smiley .
